The world had stopped. Time seemed to have stopped. I stood in front of me, eyes widened and my heart was standing still.
What he had said was something that I would never have thought could ever come from his lips. They are foreign words that don't belong to him.
"Carter, Charlotte, and I are triplets. I am Carter's brother."
Those words echoed in my head as my breath caught in my throat. The buildup of saliva filled my mouth and nausea caused my head to spin.
I planted the bottle on the counter before running into my room. I ran into the bathroom and threw my head into the toilet. All that came out were alcohol, pizza, and brownies.
Vomiting and retching into the toilet with moans and groans. Weakeningly trying to breathe as David took some of my hair away from my face. Rubbing smooth, slow circles on my back, comforting me as I throw up.
When I stopped vomiting, I had nothing else to come out. Ripping a piece of toilet paper, wrapping my mouth before weakly saying, "Get out,"
David's hand stilled on my back, making me stand up. Pushing him out of the bathroom forcefully, "I said get out,"
Closing the door and locking it. Leaning my back against it, I clutch my chest as my breath quickens. Pushing myself off the door to stand in front of the sink, washing my face and rinsing my mouth with water and mouthwash.
'David is Carter's brother?' 'How could he be Carter's brother? How could they be family?'
Throwing more cold water over my face, trying to wash the thoughts out. Trying to make sense of all of it, it just seemed so far-reaching. Too impossible to be true.
'If that's true, how could David have known about the trip? Or about the bucket list?'
Staring at the water as it went down the drain. If David is related to Carter, he has to give me more proof. Hard core, solid proof.
As I took a breath, the smell of vomit caught my nose. There was a small spot of it on my hoodie which almost caused me to throw up again. Nearly ripped it off my body, threw it in the bathtub, and put on a jacket.
Brushing my hair back, tying it up in a ponytail before opening my door. Finding David cleaning what I assumed was the spilled gin on the counter. He straightened up, walking towards me, "Anela, listen -"
My hand lay on his chest, stopping him at arm's reach, "You don't talk. Just don't say anything."
His eyes dropped to where my hand was, and his Adam's apple bobbed tightly. Lowering it before going to the kitchen, opening the fridge. Taking the large bottle of orange juice that Cameron bought for himself. It's one of the three drinks he would have while writing articles. Besides caramel latte and peppermint tea.
Pouring some into a large glass, drinking it all up before pouring a second, third, fourth glass. David stayed quiet as he watched me, waiting for permission to speak.
I couldn't look at him, not yet. Something inside of me wouldn't let me. Maybe it was the doubts, that he could have been lying. And fear that he might be telling the truth.
Swallowed hard before saying, "I'm gonna ask some questions that you have to answer honestly. No matter what."
Cold air flows through my nose as I breathe in sharply, "All questions must be answered. That's the only time you'll speak."
Forcing my eyes to look up at him, seeing that he understood. A small nod was all that he gave.
I poured myself another glass, and only drank half of the juice. Turning towards him with the first question, "What's Carter's middle name?"
