grace and ben were hosting their annual new year's eve party. the living room was filled with dancing and laughter, the kitchen filled with the sound of music and the smell of grace's cooking.
it was five minutes till midnight, and you were leaning against the stairway rails with zeke, a drink in hand. the lights from the stairway were shining down on you, somewhat blocked by blue and silver tinsel that olive had hung up that afternoon.
the two of your were laughing about some stupid joke you'd made. you felt bad drinking in front of him, knowing he's trying his hardest not to take a sip right now.
he knew how you were feeling by the look on your face and your hesitation to drink out of your cup. "don't worry about me, drink up and have fun." he says with a sweet smile. you nod your head and take another sip.
"how's your year treated you?" you ask him, finishing off your drink.
"one of the hardest, but best years of my life if i'm being honest. i got blessed with so many amazing people, and i overcame my addiction and fought my demons." he responds. "how's your year been?"
"it's truly been amazing, i couldn't thank anyone enough for what they've shown me this year, including you." you tell him.
he goes to make another comment, but cal came running over to the two of you. "guys come on, the countdown's about to start!" he said, dragging both of your hands.
"alright buddy, we're coming." you said, following him, dragging zeke by the hand along with you.
as you walk into the living room, everyone's gathered in a circle. the times square ball drop was live on the big screen tv.
"IN 10 EVERYBODY!" ben shouts.
"10." the group shouts.
"9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2..."
right before the clock turns 1, zeke grabs your hand.
"1, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!" echoes through the entire room.
zeke places one hand on your cheek, one on the back of your neck, pulling you into a kiss.
"happy new years, my love." he whispers into your mouth, leaning back for another kiss.
"happy new years." you whisper, breaking the kiss, before going back for more.
