Pictured above is the accident plane when it was in service for TAROM, photographed in 1992.
EAS Airlines Flight 4226, registered as 5 November- Echo Sierra Foxtrot (5N-ESF), was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Mallan Aminu Kano International Airport (IATA: KAN, ICAO: DNKN), Kano, Nigeria to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (IATA: LOS, ICAO: DNMM), Lagos, Nigeria, on the 4th of May 2002, the aircraft serving this route was a BAC One-Eleven S25FT that was carrying 69 passengers and 8 crew (77 in total) on board, the plane crashed into Gwammaja Quarters, a densely populated residential area located approximately 3 kilometres from the Kano Airport, the plane burst into flames, resulting in the deaths of 66 passengers and 7 crew (73 were killed and 4 survived), in addition at least 30 civilians on the ground were killed (the total death toll was 103), the crash is the deadliest aviation accident involving a BAC One- Eleven.
During the takeoff roll at Kano Airport, the controller in the tower noticed the aircraft was moving sluggishly, pacing much slower than usual, the plane passed the runway threshold, the nose was in the upward position but the main landing gear had not lifted off the ground, the plane overran the runway and struck two runway lights, the plane eventually lifted off but before it could fully lift off, the landing gear struck a ground depression, causing an impact that rattled the entire aircraft, even though the plane took off from the runway the airspeed began to drop and the crew were now facing a stall situation, the plane began to swerve from side to side, the Captain reported an engine failure, the crew tried to avoid stalling the aircraft by lowering the nose but the altitude was too low, houses could be seen from the cabin, the plane clipped a minaret of a mosque and struck numerous houses and a local Islamic school on the ground, the plane then flew into another mosque at full force and the plane burst into flames, many buildings collapsed, including the school and the mosque the plane hit.
The summary of the crash was an Engine failure due to pilot error.
