Pictured above is a similar type of aircraft involved in this crash.
Air New Zealand Flight 4374, registered as Zulu Kilo- November Foxtrot Charlie (ZK-NFC), was a flight from Gisborne Airport (IATA: GIS, ICAO: NZGS), Gisborne, New Zealand, which crashed while landing at Auckland Airport (IATA: AKL, ICAO: NZAA), Auckland, New Zealand, the plane crashed on the 17th of February 1979, the crash killed two out of the four people on board the plane.
At 14:28pm local time the aircraft, a Fokker Friendship F27-500, which was 8 years old at the time of the crash, descended to 3,000 feet and the pilots deployed the flaps, the aircrafts speed was 165 knots (305 kilometres per hour), and it increased to 211 knots (390 kilometres per hour); 2 minutes and 14 seconds later the aircraft crashed into the harbour killing two people, the Captain and a passenger.
The investigation found that the crew were misled by a visual illusion during conditions of reduced visibility into believing they were at a safe altitude and they failed to see the flight instruments sufficiently to confirm a safe landing path.
