Mexicana de Aviación Flight 940, registered as Xray Alpha- Mike Echo Mike (XA-MEM), which was operated by Mexicana de Aviación, was a scheduled international passenger flight from Benito Juárez International Airport (IATA: MEX, ICAO: MMMX), Mexico City, Mexico, to Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (IATA: PVR, ICAO: MMPR), Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, to Mazatlán International Airport (IATA: MZT, ICAO: MMMZ), Mazatlán, Mexico and finally to Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX, ICAO: KLAX), on the 31st of March 1986, the route was being served by a Boeing 727-200, the plane crashed into El Carbón, a mountain in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range which is located northwest of Mexico City, the crash killed everyone on board the plane, with 167 fatalities, the crash is the deadliest aviation disaster to occur on Mexican soil and is the deadliest involving a Boeing 727.

At 09:05am local time, 15 minutes after takeoff from Mexico City, an explosion rocked the fuselage, Captain Guadarrama and the other Flight crew in the cockpit, realising that the plane was shaking too much, declared an emergency and asked to return to Benito Juárez International Airport for an emergency landing, the airport was prepared for the landing, however the plane crashed into El Carbón mountain near the town of Maravatío, Michoacán, the plane broke into two pieces and it burst into flames, all 167 people on board were killed upon the plane impacting the mountain.

The summary of the crash was an in flight fire due to maintenance error, leading to loss of hydraulic and electrical systems.
