Luxair Flight 9642, registered as Lima Xray- Lima Golf Bravo (LX-LGB), was a scheduled international passenger flight from Berlin Airport (IATA: THF, ICAO: EDDI), Berlin, Germany to Luxembourg City Airport (IATA: LUX, ICAO: ELLX), Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, the flight was operated by Luxembourg national airliner Luxair, on the 6th of November 2002, the aircraft operating the flight was a Fokker 50 which lost control and crashed onto a field during an attempted landing at Luxembourg City Airport out of the 22 people on board, only two people survived the crash (20 were killed), the crash is the deadliest aviation disaster to occur in Luxembourg.
As the plane had been levelling off for quiet sometime after passing the radio beacon ELU (Echo Lima Uniform), the aircraft was flying a bit higher than the glide slope, to reduce their altitude faster, the Captain reduced the power lever to flight idle, claiming that by doing so the plane would quickly descend to the required altitude, however the First Officer told the Captain that the action wouldn't be enough to slow down the plane, the First Officer reported to ATC that they would continue the approach and they were cleared to land by the ATC and the crew extended the landing gear, after the landing gear was extended, the propeller speed began to increase, the speed and altitude dropped rapidly, the reverse thrust had been deployed in mid flight and the crew tried to save the aircraft, as a last resort the crew decided to shut down both engines, that didn't stop the rapid descent, the plane slammed onto terrain with it's belly, the plane crossed Route 1, scrapped the road with it's left wing, the plane then struck an embankment which caused major damage to the airframe, the plane bounced, both wheels of the landing gear and the blades came off, the tail and part of the right wing broke away, the aft fuselage detached and rested on it's right side, the aircraft stopped 25 meters (82 feet) further away, a post crash fire started on the central portion of the crushed fuselage.
The summary of the crash was Pilot error aggravated by inclement weather.
