EgyptAir Flight 648, registered as Sierra Uniform- Alpha Yankee Hotel (SU-AYH), was a regularly scheduled international passenger flight between Athen's Ellinikon International Airport (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAT), Athens, Greece and Cairo International Airport (IATA: CAI, ICAO: HECA), Cairo, Egypt, on the 23rd of November 1985, the Boeing 737-200 aircraft serving this flight was hijacked by the terrorist organisation Abu Nidal, the raid on the plane done by Egyptian troops resulted in dozens of deaths making the hijacking one of the deadliest such incidents in history.

In the exchange of gunfire onboard the plane the fuselage was punctured which caused a rapid depressurisation, the plane was forced to descend to 14,000 feet to allow the passengers to breath with the oxygen masks deploying, Libya was the original destination for the plane, but due to a lack of fuel, damage from the shootout and negative publicity, Malta was chosen as a suitable option, while the plane was approaching Malta it was dangerously low on fuel, experiencing pressurisation problems and carrying injured passengers, Maltese authorities didn't give permission for the plane to land, the hijackers insisted and they forced the crew to land at Malta International Airport (IATA: MLA, ICAO: LMML), Malta, as a last attempt to stop the landing, the runway lights were switched off but the crew managed to land the damaged plane safely, the raid of the plane killed 54 of the remains 87 passengers, two crew members and one hijacker was also killed, Omar Rezaq was the only hijacker to survive, he was arrested and he was brought before a U.S court and on the 8th of October 1996, he was sentenced to life in prison with no parole.
