Lillian and Levi were always mistaken for twins. And they were close enough. Lillian was only two years younger than her brother and stood only a couple centimeters shorter than him. Four centimeters to be exact. Both siblings had jet black hair and had their mother's face. Seeing as their mother's profession led her to be with many men nobody knew whether Levi and Lillian were just half siblings or full siblings. The only proof of this was where Levi had dark blue eyes, Lillian had a darker green. But it didn't matter to the two. They were all each other had.

When their mother died and a strange man had come to visit their mother. Lillian had hoped he was a doctor, she had been sick for a while. She remembered that day perfectly.

Kenny had come in making jokes about the woman that laid dead in the bed. Their mother.

"She's dead." Levi said. Kenny turned to look at the two children huddled together. Both were skin and bones, dressed in old rags, both were almost as pale as their dead mother.

"And you?" Kenny asked. Levi's eyes looked up from the floor to Kenny. "Are you alive?" Kenny's eyes darted over to the girl laying next to the skinny boy. "Is she alive?"

Neither sibling said anything. Levi continued to look at this stranger with a blank stare. Lillian was too tired from crying.

"Ah, gimme a break. You're not both deaf, are ya? Can ya hear me or can't ya?" Kenny walked closer to them. "Do you have a name, boy?"

"Levi. Just Levi."

"And the girl?"

"Lillian, my sister." At the sound of her name Lillian opened her eyes slowly, watching as the stranger dropped his bag and leaned against a wall.

"Mm. I get it, Kuchel." He said to their dead mother. "That's prob'ly a good call. The family name did you no favors."

"Well, I'm Kenny. That's my only name." He said, now speaking to the kids. "Me and your mother knew each other. It's nice to meetcha two."

Lillian sat up and whispered to her brother. "Do you know who that is?"

Levi shook his head. Lillian grabbed his arm and scooted closer to him.

"You kids hungry?"

Levi and Lillian looked at each other, then looked back at Kenny. Their bellies cramped from the emptiness. Not to mention their mother was dead, they could do nothing else but go with this man. Levi stood up first, then helped his sister up.

"We would be grateful for some food." Lillian said, trying to be polite. Kenny smiled and led the kids away from their dead mother and downstairs to get some food.

"Do it again." Kenny ordered the girl.

Lillian scowled at the man but did as he said. She swung at him with the knife he had gifted her. He moved out of her way, taking a couple steps to the side. But Lillian followed. With one hand she punched him and the other she tried to slash at him.

"Use your legs." Kenny reminded her.

Lillian grunted, but did as she was told. That was her mistake. As she tried to kick him Kenny grabbed her leg and shoved her to the ground.

"What was that?" Lillian yelled at him.

"Don't do what I say, I'm your enemy."

"You're training me!"

"Lily, let me show you." Levi had left his seat on the ground, where he had been watching from the side. He snuck behind Kenny and walked up to his sister. He first adjusted the way she held the knife then fixed her stance.

"Remember kids, you're not tall, you never will be tall, but you two suckers are fast. Use that to your advantage."

"Go again." Levi pushed his sister towards Kenny.

Lily flipped the knife in her hand and charged Kenny. He noticed she was running towards his left, he figured she would run by, and try to cut the left side of his ribcage. Kenny got ready but didn't expect her to slide under his legs and cut his shin. The knife was dull and Lillian didn't use much pressure, so it didn't leave a mark, but it was enough for Kenny to know what she did. Before he could turn around to face her, Lillian had used all her force to try and push him to the ground. Not that it worked. She was just a little girl. A small skinny little girl.

"You're getting better, but still not as good as your brother."

"I'll practice more." Lillian swore.

"I don't doubt it." Kenny said. "Next time you fight someone, it won't be me. You need to be ready."

You need to be ready. Those words cemented themselves in her brain. And as Kenny walked by a wall, Lillian threw her knife towards it. It landed just inches away from his face.

"Ha! If ya fought half as well as ya throw it wouldn't be a problem." He laughed, taking the knife out of the wall and handing it back to her. "Sucks for you though. Not all the people you fight will be so still."

"If I'm quick enough then they will be."

"If only." Kenny walked away, leaving Levi and Lillian by themselves.

"I've made tea." Lillian looked down to her brother who sat on the floor with a teapot in front of them.

"Thank you." She sat down and grabbed a cup. The two sat in silence, sipping their tea. "Levi, I have a question to ask you."

"What is it?"

"Do you think we will ever see the surface? Ever see the sun?"

Levi looked up at the ceiling of the cavern. "Perhaps."

"I want to see it so bad. I don't care how many people I'll have to fight."

"But you hate fighting."

"I know."
