68: Reality of War

"I can't believe you brought him." Erwin sighed as he stroked Niklas' cheek. Even though Lillian and Erwin stood right next to each other, the children still seemed to swarm around their father for protection. It was strange. Usually the children preferred Lillian. Maybe she was the devil and not Erwin.

"I had to." Lillian looked down at the ground outside of the window. "I can't leave our six month old home alone."

Just outside the barricaded door, more Yeagerists were trying to get in. Like the three before them, they had heard the gunshots and ran to investigate.

"Erwin, I need to know, what is going on?" Lillian asked. "All I've heard is rumors."

Erwin sighed. "I don't have enough time to explain it." His eyes darted to the shaking door. "Please just trust me."

"Of course I trust you, Erwin." Lillian looked down to her daughter and adopted son who held onto her. "But we need to get out of here, ok? I need to get the kids somewhere safe."

Erwin handed Niklas back to Lillian. "I will transform and get you all somewhere safe."

"The Yeagerists said they kidnapped the children to keep you from transforming." Lillian said, recalling what she had heard. She did of course trust Erwin, but she needed to know if they would be in danger if Erwin transformed.

"That's because I pretended to be a Yeagerist." Erwin gathered the children up around the window. "Marley is coming, and even worse Eren wants to start the rumbling."

Lillian froze. "What?"

Erwin put his hand on the side of her face. "I'm sorry, he's not the little boy he was when you first met him. If you have the chance to kill him, do it."

"Erwin." Lillian breathed out. "I don-"

Before she could respond Erwin jumped out of the window and transformed. The transformation would attract unwanted attention. Erwin had made enemies of just about everyone except his family. He would have to act fast.

The Armored Titan's hand reached out towards his family. With Lillian's help they all got on, all but Lillian. She zipped over onto Erwin's opposite shoulder, her guns ready in her hands.

Just as he began running away, a bolt of yellow lightning came down onto the building they had just left. And in the sky the Marleyan airships were slowly descending.

Lillian knew that she didn't have a very good way of communicating with Erwin at the moment, but she knew what he was thinking.

"Go." She shouted at him. Erwin's sea blue eyes met hers. "I will protect the kids, go Erwin." Lillian paused. Her voice broke when she spoke again. "Go take care of Eren."

His titan nodded, and set the kids down. Lillian was quick to meet them down on the ground.

"Is dad leaving us?" Carina asked.

"He'll be back." Lillian assured her only daughter. "Wave goodbye to him."

The kids did as they were told, shouting at him to be careful. Lillian uncovered Niklas to check on him before she covered him up again and tried to get her bearings.

She wanted to go protect Erwin, but she didn't want to help him kill Eren. She wanted to stay with the kids and protect them, but she still felt a need to be there and help.

Multiple pairs of heavy boots came from behind Lillian. Before she could tell if it was Marleyans or Yeagerists, she pulled her kids into a run, finding any alleyways or buildings to hide behind.
