The day was hot. Too hot. But it was the middle of summer, what else could be expected?
"Erwin, please explain to me again why we are doing all this training today?" Lillian asked as she tried to fan herself off.
"It's a good day to train." Sweat was gleaming off Erwin's forehead as he acted unbothered by the heat. "Besides, doesn't it feel nice to be using your ODM gear on a day like today?"
"No, it doesn't. Even the wind is hot, Erwin." Lillian began to walk away, but Erwin's hand grabbed her wrist.
"Do you not trust me?" He pulled her back by his side, but let go of her before anyone could see.
"Of course I trust you, but unless you can make the weather cooler then I don't think there's anything to be done."
"Commander." Hange walked up behind the two. She handed Erwin a parchment then took a couple steps back. The look on Hange's face was serious, it scared Lillian.
"I see." Erwin said as his eyes scanned the parchment. "Lillian, get your horse. Hange you and Levi will be in charge of finishing up training."
"Yes sir." As Hange walked away Lillian could have sworn she saw Hange wink at her.
Erwin and Lillian were both on their horses, riding somewhere.
"Erwin what's going on?" Lillian tried to ask him, but Erwin didn't answer.
They rode for a bit until Erwin suddenly stopped his horse. In front of them was a lake. It wasn't very big, but still big enough to be called a lake and not a pond. It was tucked away in a valley hidden mostly by trees. The water was a pretty dark blue, and was more clear than Lillian would have expected.
Erwin got off his horse then went to help Lillian off of her's. Even though she didn't need the help she still took it.
"I told you to trust me. I might not be able to change how hot it is, but I think this should be alright." Erwin said to her.
They hobbled the horses so they could graze and not get too far away from them, then walked down to the lake. Lillian took off her boots and dipped her feet into the water. The water was cool and welcoming compared to the heat.
"Did you seriously leave Hange and Levi in charge just so we could come here?" Lillian's eyes left the water and looked up to him.
Erwin nodded. "Happy Birthday darling."
"Did Levi tell you?!" Lillian almost shouted.
"He did, but don't be mad at him. I asked him a couple months ago."
"How long have you been planning this?"
"Not long. But I've kept doing something like this in the back of my mind." Erwin led her out of the water and over to a tree with a small basket under it. Inside the basket Erwin took out a couple towels and some food.
"Did Hange set this up?"
"Perhaps." Erwin hummed. He took off his jacket then began to work on his shirt. "Do you want to swim or not?"
"Or not." Lillian rolled up her pants. "I'll stand and walk in the water, but I'm not swimming."
Erwin frowned which made Lillian feel bad. She took off her jacket and the straps for her ODM gear.
"Don't take it personally Erwin, I can't swim. I don't know how."
"I can teach you." Erwin had taken off his shirt and was now working on his pants, causing Lillian to blush. She was worried that when he said swimming he meant skinny dipping. But Erwin only took off his pants, while his underwear stayed on. His hand reached for her hand.
