13: Abnormal

A couple months after their last reconnaissance mission there was finally an announcement for another one. Lillian was sad to have to go back out there and experience all that death again, and she would have to dress in uniform again, something she had been avoiding for months. So she shrugged her cloak on and walked out to the stables. It was nice to feel the heavy and familiar weight of her ODM gear at her hips again. Like the rest of the Scouts, she mounted her horse and got into formation.

"Aren't you excited?!" She heard Hange squealing from a couple meters away. Lillian rode her horse next to Levi's in an attempt to save her brother.

"Yeah, I'm thrilled." Levi answered in his usual bored tone. The three of them rode towards the front, to where Mike and Erwin were.

"Hange are all the wagons ready?" Erwin asked her.

"Yes sir. I checked myself."

"Good. Let's move out then and ride for Trost." Erwin rode ahead, the rest of the Scouts doing the same. They rode into Trost then stopped at the gate. Lillian was happy to not have the job of luring away titans anymore, instead she got to sit safely on her horse in the walls. They waited until they got the go ahead, then the gate lifted up, and they were in titan territory.

As soon as all the Scouts were out of the walls they divided into separate groups and had their flares at the ready. Lillian said her goodbyes to Hange and Mike as they left to their spots in the formation with their squads.

Not ten minutes went by when red smoke shot through the sky from the right. Lillian raised her flare gun and was about to shoot off a red flare, when another flare from the left shot out, black smoke. She quickly changed the color of her flare to black and shot it into the sky. The left flank was where Mike was. Hange's group was behind them.

It didn't take long for the abnormal to be in sight. The ugly thing ran straight towards them with its weirdly long arms flailing in the air, and a large ear to ear smile across its face.

"Do you want us to deploy ODM gear, Commander?" One of the Scouts asked.

"Wait until it's closer. Levi! Lillian! I want you two to take care of this!" Erwin shouted to the siblings behind him. The two of them didn't have to say anything for Erwin to know they were on top of it.

Once the ugly thing was close enough, Lillian shakily stood up on her saddle and sank her ODM gear into the titan's shoulder. Unlucky for them they had just ridden out of a town and were in an open field. Levi aimed his ODM gear into its other shoulder. The two flew towards the titan, but the stupid thing was fast, and it didn't help that it had long arms. One arm reached for Levi while the other reached for Lillian. Levi was fast enough, avoiding the arm and slicing through it, but Lillian was not as quick as her brother. It grabbed her by the waist, pinning one of her arms in its hand. With her free arm she hacked at the hand, cutting its fingers off and managing to escape. She anchored her ODM gear into the titan's neck and swung herself to the back, where Levi was cutting through the titan's nape.

"Nice job." Lillian said, jumping off the titan and onto the ground. Levi was close behind her and whistled for the horses. In the distance Lillian could see a swarm of titans running towards Erwin's squad. Their two horses rode up to them, they got on their horses and rode back towards the group.

"Look over there!" Levi pointed at something to the left of them. In the distance they saw Mike's squad, closing the formation and riding closer to Erwin's squad.

"That abnormal must have pushed them closer to the center of the formation." Lillian noted.

"That doesn't make any sense, we just killed the abnormal. Unless that was a different one."
