36: The Female Titan

Lillian had never been to the Calaneth District. It wasn't much different from Trost, maybe a bit nicer. The people in Calaneth were certainly nicer than the ones in Trost.

"Hange!" Lillian called to her friend as she rode past her to her spot in the formation.

"What's up Lil?" Hange stopped her horse.

"Have you seen some of the taverns here? We should go to one of these, they look nicer than the ones in Trost and Shiganshina."

"And yet they're probably filled with the same scum." Hange laughed. "But yeah of course. Maybe this time instead of inviting everyone we just do you, me, and our dates."

Lillian smiled. Her, Erwin, Hange, and Moblit. It would be quite the double date. "Sounds interesting."

"I think the word you're looking for is fun." Hange kicked her horse forward. "I gotta go. You know how Erwin gets when everyone isn't on time."

A couple minutes later the gates opened and the 57th recon mission began. Lillian rode with Levi and his squad in the rear center of the formation. Erwin was center front of the formation.

Since the Levi squad and Lillian were in the safest position of the formation they only watched as red smoke signals went off around them, even a black smoke signal. This early? Lillian thought. It reminded her of the one mission, where Erwin had almost died, before they started dating.

Lillian stayed at the back of the group, in case a titan snuck up on them. An abnormal titan. Or an intelligent one. She looked ahead and saw some of them exchange words, but the wind in her ears was too loud, so Lillian stayed in the dark on what they were discussing. Not that she needed to know, she already knew what was going to happen.

When Erwin was stressed or still piecing together a plan, he would lay it out and explain it to Lillian. She never had anything to really add or say, she wasn't a tactician like Erwin, but it seemed to help Erwin just to say it out loud to someone. Plus Lillian found it charming.

Green smoke went off around them, Oluo reached for his flare and also set off a green smoke signal. A messenger Scout rode up next to Levi.

"It appears the right-wing spotters have been wiped out! The early warning network is compromised. One of you will need to relay the message down the line." The Scout yelled loud enough for Lillian to hear. Levi turned around, and a moment later Petra was gone.

More black smoke. Eren was the next to fire off a smoke signal.

After a while Petra came back to the squad as they continued to ride ahead. Lillian looked ahead, studying Eren's face. He was terrified. In fact, all of Levi's squad was. The only difference was they were better at hiding it then Eren.

"Lily!" Levi called. Lillian pushed her horse to catch up in front with Levi. Ahead of them the forest of giant trees laid in front of them.

"What's up?"

"We will be entering the forest soon, I want you to stay by me."

Lillian rode her horse right next to Levi's so there was no need for yelling, giving them some secrecy. "I thought it would be better if I stayed in the back. Just in case the abnormal is faster than we thought."

"I trust my squad to take it down if it does come to that. For now stay by me and trust in our horses." Levi looked ahead. "I think Erwin would kill me if anything happened to you."

"Like he could kill you." Lillian snorted.

Levi's squad entered the forest. Giving them cover, yet also making it easier for a titian to jump up at them.
