Summary: A case reminds you of what you and your boyfriend went through when you were in the Rangers.
Pairings: Jay Halstead x NCIS Girlfriend, Kim Burgess x Sister, NCIS x Reader, Intelligence x Reader
Warnings: Fluff, slight angst, slight PTSD, slight blood, mentions gunsIt was late and only you and Gibbs were in the bullpen. He was finishing paperwork and you were looking for a flight back home.
"Burgess, what are you still doing here," Gibbs asks when he looks up.
"I was looking for a flight back home. Wanted to see my family and friends back in Chicago."
Gibbs gives you a look.
"This case took me back to my time with the Rangers," you tell him.
"Talk to Vance before he leaves," he says, motioning towards the office upstairs.
You head upstairs and Vance's secretary lets you in.
"Agent Burgess, what can I do for you this evening," Vance asks.
"I was wondering if I could take a leave of absence and return home to Chicago."
"Absolutely. How long were you thinking?"
"Maybe two weeks. This case, it was a rough one for me personally."
"Take all the time you need."
You thank him and head back to your desk.
"I'll be back in a couple of weeks."
Ziva, Tony, and McGee came back up from Abby's lab as you gathered your things.
"Where are you going," McGee asks.
"I'm going back to Chicago. This case was not kind to me."
"How so," Ziva questions.
"This case was personal for me and I need to get my head on straight."
And with that, you head to the elevator and down to the parking garage. You pull your phone out and text your sister.
You: can you pick me up from O'Hare tomorrow at 11?
Kim: you're coming home?
You: rough case
Kim: totally but I have work
You: I knew you were working tomorrow that's why I asked
Kim: you wanna surprise Jay?
You: yeah
Kim: lips are sealed
The next day, you texted your sister that you had landed. She grabbed her coat and knocked on Voight's door.
"Hey, what's up?"
"My sister just landed at O'Hare. Am I good to get her and bring her back here?"
The sergeant nods and she leaves. She drives to the airport and picks you up out front.
"Oh, Jay's gonna freak when he finds out I kept this from him," she tells you.
"He really is."
"So, why are you home? And I don't want any excuses."
"The case brought back some memories of when Jay and I were overseas, that's all."
"Alright."
The drive back to the precinct was silent but comfortable with the radio playing quietly. Kim parked and took you upstairs. You didn't see Jay and Hailey, which heightened the suspense of surprising him. Adam gave you a hug and you returned it.
"Hey, we're back," Jay says, throwing his coat on his chair.
Hailey squeals when she sees you, making Jay confused. You pull away from your best friend and Jay's jaw drops.
"What are you doing here? I thought you were in D.C.," he asks, kissing you.
"Can we talk in private," you ask quietly.
"Yeah, c'mon."
Jay leads you to the break room, shutting the door behind him.
"What's up?"
"Uh, one of the Marines we hung out with overseas, um, Kingston," you start.
"What about him?"
"He was killed the other day. That was the case we just wrapped."
Jay lets out a breath and sits on the couch as you lean against the counter.
"What happened? I just talked to him last week. We were gonna grab drinks at Molly's when he came to visit."
"He was shot. Execution style in Baltimore. Since he had no family, and I was listed as an emergency contact, I had to confirm it was him," you choke out.
"C'mere."
You cuddle into your boyfriend and let a few tears escape. Hailey knocks on the door and you motion for her to come in.
"Hey, everything alright," she asks, coming in with everyone else in tow.
"Why is my sister crying," Kim asks.
You tell them what you told Jay. Kim clings to Adam and Hailey wipes a few tears. Kevin, Antonio, and Voight all have pain written on their faces.
"That's why you came home," Kim asks you.
"Yeah. Yeah, it is."
