The Hay Fever Hinderance

Spring had arrived in full flourish, the trees were finally turning green once more and the wildflowers outside begun to spring up from the ground, brightening everywhere up in an array of colours. It was one of Leon's favourite times of the year, but for me it was a constant battle with my worst enemy; hay fever. I'd always suffered with the symptoms ever since I was little, but I never let it stop me from making the most of the warmer weather and going outside to garden or have picnics in the fields with my boyfriend. However, this year the pollen seems to be getting to me more than usual.

It started with the tickling of my nose as we walked through the neighbourhood, listening to the comforting sound of people cutting their lawns, then a few sneezes that made my eyes water. Leon just chuckled at me as we walked, basking in the sunshine as if he was finally emerging from the winter blues. I, however, was battling my symptoms whilst being on the brink of insanity. My sniffles became more prominent until finally Leon stopped to look at me with concern.

"Are you alright?" He asked softly, reaching out a hand to stroke my cheek. I nodded, but at the same time the breeze picked up, sending out another wave of tickles to my senses. This time my throat became really scratchy, and I began coughing. Leon's eyes widened as he panicked, but I reached out and gave him a thumbs up to show that I wasn't dying.

"Hay fever." I gasp out, clearing my throat. Leon just stepped closer to me, wrapping an arm around me protectively as he guided us to turn around and head back home. I buried my face into his side to keep from inhaling more of the damn spring scents and pollens. It helped a little, though I probably looked odd hiding my face away as if I was some kind of vampire.

As soon as we were home my hay fever decided to come out in full force. I sat on the sofa to read a book whilst sneezing  and coughing every few minutes. Leon kept giving me strange looks, as if he was on the verge of taking me to the hospital. I kept reassuring him that I was fine, but then I'd sniffle and blow my nose as if I had some kind of illness. Leon helped though, by constantly supplying me with tissues, and when his shoulders finally slumped in understanding that I wasn't dying, he began to tease me. When I'd go to sneeze again Leon would pretend to sneeze too, grinning from ear to ear as I flipped him off. He was kind too though, and begun to care for me as my symptoms worsened. He made me warm drinks and offered to go to the store to get some allergy medication.

For once I nodded, needing something to clear my nose and make me feel less like a groggy snot monster and more like myself again. When Leon came home with some kind of liquid medicine I took one look at the bottle and shook my head. "No way, that stuff is practically liquified drugs." I pushed it away as Leon gave me a pointed look.

"That's fine, we're not going out anywhere you can be as drowsy as you need to be. Come on, open up." He gestured as he twisted off the measuring cap and poured the right amount. I pulled a face, taking it from him hesitantly before downing it on one mouthful. Straight away I scrunched up my features in disgust, meanwhile Leon winced on my behalf. I washed it down with some water then settled back on the sofa, waiting for the stuff to kick in. As the medication took effect, I felt a wave of drowsiness wash over me, making me feel like I was on cloud nine. Everything felt light and floaty, I knew that stuff would drug me.

My symptoms eased but so did my lips. My brain couldn't grasp anything and so I began to talk about the most random things as Leon cuddled me and went along with my nonsensical babbles. His fingers weaved through my hair as I begun to slur, feeling drunk and giddy, then all of a sudden a wave of sleepiness washed over me.

"You're adorable." Leon murmured as I nestled into his warmth, feeling cosy and comfortable. I nodded in agreement as my eyes felt heavy. Then before I knew it I was pulled under, finally safe from the sneezes and sniffles within Leon's arms.
