Leon's POV:
I stare at the TV, not really watching it since it's been one of those long days and all I want to do is relax with my wife sleeping on my lap, her light snores fill in the silence every time the news segment ends. I look down at her, unable to hold back a smile as I brush her hair away from her mouth and lean down to kiss her head. We've only been married for just over two years but I already feel like I've spent a lifetime loving her, it comes so easy to me. From the floor our seven year old son watches, now disinterested with playing with his action figures before bed.
"Dad, teach me how to be romantic, like you are with mom?" He blurts out, tilting his head as he watches us with a mixture of contentment and jealously. I let out a small chuckle as I nod, wondering where this came from.
"Sure buddy, but...you've not got a specific woman in mind, do you?" I half tease, wiggling my eyebrows as S/N frowns and shakes his head, he turns his attention away from me and focuses back to picking up his figures.
"No, I just don't want to be alone forever." S/N mumbles with a hint of sadness, his cheeks flame at the confession. With care and a little effort, I ease Y/N off of me and slide off of the sofa to kneel next to our son. He doesn't meet my eyes until I set a hand on his head and ruffle his hair whilst giving him a reassuring smile.
"You're only seven years old kiddo, you've got plenty of time to figure all that out." I softly say. S/N nods, sighing as he stands and yawns, one hand rubs his eyes as his eyes glance to the doorway. He plods to it, stopping when I stand and gently grab his shoulder. "Tomorrow I'll show you how I keep your mom on her toes when it comes to romance, OK?" I murmur. S/N's eyes widen a little as a smile splits his face, then he nods with a grin before heading to bed. I look behind me at my still sleeping wife, wondering what she'd think of all this.
The next day, the promised 'teaching of romance' begins. S/N eagerly watches me from the second I wake up. He trails behind me as I step into the kitchen, we both share a nod in agreement that he's paying attention, then I get to work trying to teach my kid how to be romantic. Y/N stands at the kitchen counter pouring three bowls of cereal for us all as well as dicing up some fruit for S/N, without her knowing I quietly sneak behind her before wrapping my arms around her middle and kissing her cheek.
"Good morning Mrs Kennedy, you're looking as beautiful as ever." I murmur, winking at our son who sits at the kitchen table with eyes like a hawk. I smother a chuckle as I turn back to my wife, who's suspiciously eyeing me up, but the slight curve of her lips tells me she's enamoured by my actions. She giggles and mumbles a reply to me, then shoos me away by shoving a strawberry in my mouth. I chew it, giving her hip one last squeeze before I head to the table and sit with my son, who looks mischievous and gleeful.
"So lots of kisses then?" He whispers, leaning in close as I huff and shake my head.
"Not at your age, I think you'd give your mom a heart attack is she saw you kissing any of your girlfriends or boyfriends. But when you're....older," I wave a hand up, unsure what age I'd want to see him find someone romantically, "then I suppose yeah, kissing is okay." I finish just as Y/N narrows her eyes and brings over breakfast. My son and I thank her, then we all eat together like we do every morning, but I've got plans that benefits all three of us.
"So boys, what are we doing today?" Y/N asks as she finishes her last mouthful of food. I glance at S/N before replying.
"I was thinking of taking S/N to the park, maybe having some father/ son time for an hour or so whilst you take a break and have some time to relax." I suggest, hoping I've said it right. Thankfully my wife nods and checks with our son before kissing mine and S/N's cheeks and leaving us to our own devices. S/N looks confused until I smile and nod my head towards the front door. Side by side we leave the house and go on a little adventure to the store, S/N doesn't question it until we're walking down the aisles, my eyes scanning the store for the perfect gift for my wife.
"Dad, why are we here?" He asks after some time.
"We're getting your mom some flowers and a card, I think it'd be nice if we both write in it and tell her how much we love her, don't you think? Since you're my accomplice you can grab some chocolate for yourself too." I softly reply, setting a hand on his head as S/N nods enthusiastically. We search the bundles upon bundles of fresh flowers until my son picks out a nice, colourful bouquet. I praise him for having a good eye then together we pick a nice simple card that we'll write in later. I take him down the candy aisle and we pick out a few treats as well as two ice creams before I pay for it all and we head back home- ice creams unwrapped and being devoured as quick as we can so Y/N doesn't find out we've not actually been to the park.
Once home, we sneak past Y/N who's on the sofa immersed in a book, then we each write a nice message in the card for her. I obviously tell her how I love her and that she's the best wife and mother a man could ask for, and S/N writes about how she makes the house a home. Even at seven he's a bright and emotionally intelligent kid, I'm proud to have a son like him. Together we then tip toe into the living room, careful to make sure it's all a surprise, then I suddenly place a gentle kiss on Y/N's neck as she jumps and bursts out laughing. My lips meet hers before I show her the flowers and card I'd hidden behind my back. Her expression is one of surprise as she sits up and sets the book aside.
"What's this for?" She asks a little breathlessly, looking between S/N and I.
I shrug as S/N smiles and comes to my side. "We just love you so much, and thought they'd brighten your day." S/N replies for me. I nod with him, wrapping an arm around him to hug him from the side. Together we watch as she sniffs the flowers then opens the card, her gorgeous eyes shining with tears as she reads the messages. Her lip wobbles as she holds a hand to her chest, then she opens her arms for us to embrace. All three of us share a hug, united as a loving family for a few minutes until she sniffles and pulls back.
"Thank you both so much, I love you both too." She whispers before wiping her eyes and standing up. S/N takes my hand, dragging me through the house and outside before grabbing a ball and kicking it towards me. I chuckle at his ways, then kick the ball back before S/N finally speaks, a confused lilt in his tone.
"So, basically, you're really nice and get her stuff?"
I snort, jogging to catch the ball and kick it back to him. "Yeah, kind of. But it's more about doing things that matter and taking time out of your day to show how much you care."
He thinks about it, face scrunching up until he nods and rushes to me, his arms wrap around me as he hugs me tightly. "Thanks for being a great dad." He mumbles. A lump in my throat grows as I feel a variety of emotions at once, I bend down and scoop him up, hugging him close to me as he links his arms around my neck.
"Nah, you're just the best son." I retort because otherwise I might cry in front of the kid. We play some more outside until Y/N joins us in the sun, she laughs and joins us as we lie on the grass and make up pictures from the fluffy clouds, without hesitation she joins our game, occasionally tickling our son as he giggles and rolls around. Y/N and I look at each other, sharing a look of love and pride for the family we've got, then suddenly S/N leans over and kisses her cheek, laughing as her mouth pops open in an 'o'. She then sits up, tackling him into a hug on her lap as he wriggles and yelps for help from me.
"Are you both gonna tell me why you've been weird all day?" she asks, raising an eyebrow at us as S/N and I share a secretive look. I think- or hope- he now understands a bit more about romance and the lengths I'd go to for his mom, but he's still got a lot of time to figure things out and learn about his own preferred love language.
"Nope," We reply together, grinning from ear to ear.
Y/N huffs, releasing our son as we all head inside. I can't help but to feel overwhelmingly happy in that moment, I'm so lucky to have at least one person that loves me, yet alone two. Love might not have ever been on my mind at the start, but now as the man that I am, it's all I can think about.
