Beneath the light, there's darkness

Midterms, it's that time of the term once again.

L sat on a chair, fidgeting the keyboards he had. Just passing time while all of his students answer all the questions he prepared for all of them.

Webcam 1, webcam 2. There's at least 3 webcams installed in one room. To see who's cheating, he just checks it in his computer. It's way too much of a trouble to go around and supervise. It's natural for L to rig all the security cameras in his computer.

"Seat number 34, please give me your test paper" He announced.

Murmurs filled the place "Oh no, he caught by Ryuzaki-sensei" "How does he even do it?" "Man, I really hate this class"

The student came front and submitted his paper with a dejected look. Ryuzaki simply watched the student's movements boredly and went back on watching the screen.

It's nothing new that someone tried to cheat in his class yet again. He's notorious for being strict afterall. He can't also blame them, he's been setting them up to fail. Not teaching his subject properly, engaging in difficult topics they could barely handle. He even wonders why he's still teaching at this very moment. Not that it matters in this setting, they all chose to be here, so be it.

But among all of them, there's this one guy who's been exceeding L's expectation.

"Thank you for the exam, Ryuzaki-sensei" there's something eerie about his tone, although it sounds polite and sweet. Beneath the smile and fake respect, lies an extremely grusome thought.

Light Yagami

A kid taking this term for the 4th time, a kid who's doing it in purpose for some reasons.

He never talked with L other than exchanging pleasantries and such. It's not like L has a reason to talk with him. But based on his observations, Light Yagami wants something from him. To answer what, L doesn't know either.

Staring deep into his eyes, L can't look away. He is way too curious about his intentions. It's bothersome.

Light Yagami left his exam next to the other ones.

L watched him move away but his call stopped Light's tracks "Yagami Light-san meet me later in my office"

.

L sat in the couch, both his legs folded and his thumb under his lips. He kept thinking what's going through Light Yagami's head. Why take his class again and again, if he could pass it?

Scoring half of the test correctly while leaving the rest in the wrong. Again and again, why? To L, it feels useless to keep doing it.

L investigated if Light Yagami is close or acquainted with any of the students he handles. Yet, it's either they like Light or wish to know Light. In other words, he holds no personal attachment to any of them.

L tried making the exams harder and Light still received the same score. If Light didn't have any personal endeavors in his class, then there's only one possible reason why he's here.

The door flew open, Light Yagami stood in the room with his seemingly neutral smile. He closed the door behind him and sat in the seat available on the opposite side of L's.

"What seems to be the problem, Professor?" He is acting dumb, but not like it works.

"You've scored 50 out of a 100 once again, Yagami-san. I must congratulate you, no one gets a full score in my exams" he said, resting his hands on his knees.

"Full score? You must be mistaken, you said I scored 50, correct?" L stared at Light with an unconvinced look and simply adverted his gaze elsewhere.

"Mhm, I've given you a different paper. Have you noticed it?" L has no time to entertain Light with his manipulation tactic. Because L came prepared too "I did say each and one of you will receive different sets of questions. I see how you glossed over the fact I gave you a difficult exam than others yet here you are, with the same score"

"Aren't you simply speculating, Ryuzaki-sensei? I got a random test paper from the pile" L made sure he'll get the 57th paper, L already intented and calculated it already. Reasoning out is only an excuse. To keep his normal facade, Light Yagami keeps playing this aloof nice guy. It's quite endearing to watch.

"You can deny it, but I see you have goal in this" Light's eyes were anticipating, but his expression says he's confused. He's good at acting, how fun "What do you want from me, Yagami-san?"

Light flinched at his question. Did he truly think he won't be caught?

"Ryuzaki-sensei, why are you so sure I want something from you?" Light leaned across the table, going near L's face.

"You looked perplexed, Yagami-san. Did I touch a nerve?"
