The explosion rocked the building, the walls trembling from the force. Dust and debris rained down from the ceiling, and the sound of alarms blaring filled the air.
"Time to go" He said, pulling back the sword and sliding it into its sheath.
Eri's wide, terrified eyes met his, and for a moment, it seemed like all of his progress with her had been reversed. Then, with trembling arms, she reached out to him.
Katsuki carefully lifted Eri into his arms, feeling her small, fragile body shake against him. "Hang on, we're almost out of here"
He didn't want to lose the connection he had with her, considering how children were naturally skittish, but he had to keep his identity close. Katsuki smiled at her before pulling his mask back down and clipping it in place underneath the collar of his suit.
As they made their way back through the dimly lit corridors, the building continued to shake with the force of Dabi's explosions. The air was thick with dust and smoke, making it difficult to see, but Katsuki's pressed forward.
They encountered a few guards along the way, but before he needed to react, one of them transformed. Toga took care of them quickly, flashing a toothy grin at Katsuki. Eri clung to him, her tiny fingers gripping his suit with surprising strength.
"We're almost out" Katsuki murmured to her, trying to offer reassurance despite the chaos around them.
They finally reached the stairs leading to the surface. Katsuki could hear the sounds of battle above them, the shouts and explosions echoing through the building.
As they ascended, Eri buried her face in his shoulder, her sobs muffled against his suit. Katsuki's heart ached for the girl, knowing the torment she had endured.
When they emerged into the night air, the scene was one of utter chaos. Dabi's explosions had torn through the compound, leaving flames and debris in their wake. The League rallied around them, creating a protective barrier as they made their escape.
Shigaraki's face reflected his satisfaction. "Well done. We'll take care of her now"
Katsuki nodded, feeling a rare sense of accomplishment. For once, his actions had brought about a positive change. He gently handed Eri to Shigaraki, who surprisingly accepted her with a soft touch.
Eri's wide eyes remained fixed on Katsuki, her small hand reaching out to grasp his sleeve. "I... wanna stay with you" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the destruction around them.
Katsuki looked to Shigaraki, who sighed before handing her back. She seemed to relax once she was back in his arms.
"We'll meet up again soon" The supervillain said before turning and leaving. Toga waved with a bright smile as she followed the group. Eri gave a shy wave back
Well... Now what?
Katsuki stood there for a moment, watching the League disappear into the night. The weight of Eri in his arms grounded him, a tangible reminder of why he was doing this. The chaos around them seemed to fade as he focused on the small girl who had clung to him, trusting him despite everything.
Eri's small hand tightened on his harness, and Katsuki looked down at her. "You're safe now" he said softly, his voice carrying a rare gentleness. "I'll get you somewhere safe"
Eri nodded, her eyes were still wide with her overflowing adrenaline. Katsuki started walking, navigating the debris-laden ground with care. He knew he had to get her far from the compound and into a secure place before she could start to heal.
「Some things could never heal, they could simply be redirected into things like anger and a warped sense of morality.」
He found a warehouse not too far from the compound. It wasn't ideal, but it would do for the first few hours. They had to wait until everything settled down.
Katsuki set Eri down gently on a crate. "Stay here for a bit. I'll make sure everything's safe" he instructed, and Eri nodded, curling up with her knees to her chest. He handed her a small knife
Katsuki went around the warehouse, securing the entrances and making sure there were no threats. Thankfully, the warehouse had been shut down for the night. As long as they left before the place opened back up in the morning, it would be okay.
Once he was satisfied, he returned to Eri's side. She had fallen asleep, her tiny body curled up against the adjacent crate, clutching the knife he'd given her.
He sat down beside her, leaning against the wall, and let out a deep breath. The night's events played through his mind, the adrenaline slowly ebbing away. The reality of what they'd just done, what they'd just accomplished, started to sink in.
He watched over Eri as she slept, her breathing steady and calm. In that moment, he felt a strange sense of peace. Despite the recent events, she slept soundly.
Hours passed, and as dawn began to break, Katsuki knew they couldn't stay there much longer. He gently woke Eri, who she shot up with sleepy eyes.
"Time to go" He said. "Let's find a better place"
Eri nodded, still clinging to his knife. Katsuki lifted her again, and they set off into the early morning light. He didn't know what the future held, but for now, he had a new purpose: to protect Eri and ensure her safety.
Now... If only he could figure out where to hide her.
