Katsuki stood in Teskai's apartment, leaning against the couch as he watched Teskai's breathing begin to even out. Katsuki watched silently, the relief barely registering on his face, even though the tension in his chest began to loosen.
"'Tsuki" His friend then called quietly. His dark eyes fluttered back open, meeting Katsuki's own for a brief moment. "You can go do what you need to. I'm not going anywhere"
Katsuki scoffed, turning his face away, hiding the concern he knew his face showed. "Promise?"
Teskai grinned as his eyes slid close again. "I promise, you big baby"
But as the moment calmed, a different weight began pressing on his mind.
His parents. They had to know by now.
The entire country had seen his face, the headlines flashing across every screen in every city. His mother's voice would haunt him until he finally faced her.
With a resigned sigh, Katsuki stepped out the door, leaving behind the soft quiet of Teskai's apartment. He knew where he had to go. As much as he hated it, there was no escaping it now.
He needed to go home.
The walk there was agonizingly slow, he hadn't bothered to change out of his suit or clean up. They'd seen him.
So now Katsuki stood outside the door to his parents' house, staring at the handle as if it was a loaded gun. He knew they'd seen the news by now. Knew they had questions, demands, he didn't want to answer.
With a heavy breath, he pushed the door open.
The familiar smell of home hit him first, followed by the silence. Not the usual bickering or the sound of the TV in the background. His parents were waiting.
His mother was the first to notice when he entered the living room, her face a mixture of relief and hesitation. "...Katsuki"
Katsuki didn't even have time to respond before she crossed the room in a few brisk strides and wrapped him in a tight, almost suffocating hold. "What the hell were you thinking?" Her voice was sharp, but he could hear the fear underneath.
The fear of him. Of what he'd done. Of what he'd become.
His father's expression was more pained than angry or fearful. "You... You could've told us"
Katsuki stiffened in his mother's grip before pushing her back. "I didn't want to drag you into this"
"You dragged us into it the moment your face hit every goddamn screen in the country!" She shot back, her anger rising. "You- A mercenary? That's what you've been this whole time? A fucking mercenary?"
Katsuki's jaw clenched, the guilt simmering under his skin. "Yeah"
"Yeah?!" Her voice climbed an octave. "You're out there, killing people, acting like some villain, and you didn't think to tell us? Do you know what it's like to watch that and realize that's your fucking son?!"
His father stepped forward, his voice calm but heavy with disappointment. "We knew you were out every night, but this..."
Katsuki's eyes flicked between them, his stomach churning. "You knew I was a vigilante"
"That's not the same and you know it" The man said firmly. "We thought you were just out helping people"
"I am!" Katsuki snapped, his frustration bubbling over. "You think it's easy? That it's so easy to be a hero? You think I had a choice?"
"You always have a choice!" His mother screeched back, her voice cracking. "You could've talked to us! Could've trusted us"
Katsuki's fists clenched at his sides, the weight of everything pressing down on him. "I didn't want you to be a part of it! You wouldn't understand"
"We're your damn parents, Katsuki! We don't have to understand everything, but do you have any idea what it's gonna be like to have heroes at our door, asking for a fucking criminal?" She shouted, her voice laced with both anger and desperation.
For a moment, the room was filled with tense silence. Katsuki stared at the floor, his heart pounding in his chest. His mother was right, but that didn't make it easier to swallow.
"I can't fix this" He muttered, the words slipping out before he could stop them.
His mother's eyes softened, opening her mouth to continue. But Katsuki couldn't.
The wall between them had grown too high, and the weight of his choices had made it impossible for him to climb it. Without another word, he turned and headed for the door.
"Katsuki..." He heard his father call softly, but he didn't stop.
Only when he was out the door did he answer. "Katsuki Bakugou is dead"
The 'thud' of the door closing felt very final. Very... sad.
