When called to Yuuei one day, Katsuki was apprehensive. He wasn't someone they could just call over. He was a criminal to them and any interactions were of high stakes.
That being said, Nezu had personally promised his presence wouldn't be compromised; that he would have a complete immunity while on the grounds today.
Katsuki obviously caught the 'today' part. He was no idiot and this was Nezu's way of keeping him in check. He was still a criminal after all, regardless of his past status as a hero student.
A status that felt like it was s lifetime ago.
So as Katsuki's footsteps echoed in the nearly empty halls of Yuuei, the familiar walls, once brimming with life and the sound of aspiring heroes, now felt distant, cold. Every step brought back memories he'd rather forget, reminding him just how far removed he was from the world of heroism.
He passed by a few students on his way to Nezu's office, their eyes widening with a mixture of fear and curiosity as they recognized the figure in the iconic red and black suit. They whispered among themselves, but none dared approach him. It wasn't like he belonged here.
He knew that.
Approaching the grand entrance of the principal's office, Katsuki paused for a second, taking in the familiarity of it all. The last time he had been truly called to this office, he was still just Bakugou Katsuki; he'd been called down as the explosive, arrogant brat who dreamed of being the top hero. Now, he was something else entirely. Someone whose methods made him a outcast in the very world he used to idolize.
He wasn't called here like that anymore. He wasn't called here as Katsuki Bakugou. Deadpool, that's who he was to Yuuei now.
With a deep breath, he pushed the door open. Nezu sat at his desk, his small frame almost comically out of place behind the large desk.
"Hello" Nezu greeted warmly, gesturing for him to take a seat. "Thank you for coming"
Katsuki didn't respond right away, his eyes scanning the room to make sure no one else was present. He wasn't in the mood for surprises.
"I made it clear I'm not getting dragged into any more training bullshit" Katsuki muttered as he stepped inside, ignoring the seat and opting to stand with his arms crossed. "So? What's this about?"
Nezu smiled calmly, folding his paws together on the desk. "I assure you, nothing has changed. You're here because I have a... proposition. One that I believe you're uniquely suited for"
Katsuki raised an eyebrow behind his mask. "And what makes you think I'd want to get involved in anything here?"
Nezu's eyes twinkled with that same calculating glint that promised schemes.
"Because what I need is special. It's something only someone with your particular set of skills can handle"
Katsuki narrowed his eyes, the suspicion creeping in. He knew Nezu wouldn't call him here without a damn good reason, especially with this kind of wording.
"Go on" He tightened the way his arms we're crossed. "What do you want?"
Nezu's smile widened slightly. "I need you for a rescue mission. Off the books. One of our new heroes has been taken, and sending in the usual pros would draw too much attention. You, on the other hand... can handle it discreetly"
Katsuki scoffed, shaking his head. "You want me to save one of your heroes? That's rich. You know how this is going to look. I don't deal in rescue missions as often as you'd like to think"
"Of course" Nezu said smoothly, not missing a beat. "That's why I said this mission has to be off the books. I need this yo be done by someone who operates in the gray areas. Someone who doesn't follow the rules like the rest of us"
Katsuki stared him down. "And what's in it for me?"
"There will be compensation. Substantial, if that's what you're concerned about"
"I have plenty of jobs that commission more than you can imagine. Why should I play your games?"
Nezu's unsettling smile didn't falter. "Eri's future. She's growing, and she'll need a safe place. You've kept her safe for now, but if you complete this mission, I can ensure she'll have a place at Yuuei; protected, with access to the best training and care"
Katsuki's jaw clenched, the words hitting him harder than he wanted to admit. Nezu knew how to twist the knife in just the right way.
Then again, Eri hadn't shown any interest in leaving him. She seemed particularly attached to Teskai. The teen was teaching her everything she needed. Yuuei were just gonna fuck her mindset up.
"And you'll guarantee her safety?" Katsuki asked, his voice low and mocking. Safety? Yeah right. Safety his ass.
"I'll personally see to it" Nezu replied, his tone soft but firm. "You have my word"
Katsuki glared at the small principal for a long moment before letting out a scoff. "Eri is fine where she is. I'll do your shitty rescue, but I want access to Yuuei's general studies curriculum"
"Consider it done" Nezu said, smile widening as if he'd won something.
