Welcome to our first "For Your Information" chapter! I created this mainly to fill and share some facts about the book! And because if I included these facts in the main one, it would just be Nion rambling.
They are that that talks of going
But never gets away;
And that talks no less for knowing,
As it grows wiser and older,
That now it means to stay.
- Robert Frost
Firstly, the concept of William connecting with the trees through Dryad's spirit made me excited. I also had the idea—and liked that idea—of making them move and speak, like Treebeard! I was actually thinking between Ents or Dryads to become William's companions, but eventually settled with the Ents, who—in LOTR—are the shepherds of the forest.
The Ents and Dryads exist together, proven by Dryad herself, who guards Elysia. There are more Dryads in the kingdom but are significantly few. In the whole continent, they are more prevalent in the Heart Kingdom, a place of abundance in nature. Just like what Dryad said in Chapter 17, Dryads are shy and don't really reveal themselves to people. Long time ago, in the Clover Kingdom, the Dryads even had a tribe together, but mortals; of course, hunted them down nearly to extinction. That's why they became few and went to hiding.
Ents are also secluded creatures who don't really leave their forests. But in contrast to the Dryads, they are far more aggressive and dangerous when it comes to nature. They are millions of years old, but as they grow older they lose the ability to move; thus, settling in a place where they can sleep forever. They become the trees that we see in our time.
However, these trees still don't lose consciousness, they simply lose the ability to have a body like the Ents. They can store their memories, or use their roots to defend or attack when they feel any danger. Although when they permanently sleep, they can't use their roots like that anymore. Memories are all they have.
On the previous chapter, we get to meet the Ents! I was just actually thinking of having only Nion, who,—in fact, had a lot of names before I settled to Nion! On my drafts he was first called Dair (I think I searched it somewhere but I already forgot how I got that name), to Banyan (which is a literal name of a tree), and finally, to Nion.
When I found Nion, turned out he had a lot of friends. We see some of them: Fearn, Huath, Luis, and Duir. I included them because, well, Golden Dawn sure is a large squad, isn't it? And I just really adore Ents. I have fun writing them.
The five of them reside in the strong magic regions, by the Forsythe Fortress. They are considered the chief Ents of their respective trees, like a superior or a leader. The other chief Ents are scattered throughout the Clover Kingdom.
We are still yet to meet:
• Saille, the willow tree
• Tinne, the holly tree
• Coll, the hazel tree
• Muin, the vine tree
• Gort, the ivy tree
• Ngetal, the reed tree
• Ruis, the elder tree and; (the youngest)
• Beith, the birch tree (the oldest)
They are in fact, based from Celtic Astrology.
But among our five Ents, Luis is the oldest. Even so, Nion is considered their captain. He is the strongest and the wisest Ent of their time. Plus, he has a lot of knowledge about the world. It is also because he has the closest connection to William, due to the fact that he is an ash tree.
And the world tree Yggdrasil, my lads, is a mythical ash tree. ;)
Out of the five, the oak tree Duir is the youngest, but the fastest, but also generally strong too. Young Ents are physically fast (Ent standards) as their bodies are lighter than old Ents. Although they are not that experienced to create root tunnels, their roots are thinner than the old ones, but because of their agility; is the fastest for transport. Old Ents' tunnels are sturdier and more efficient, but quite slower than the young Ents.
In the previous chapter (I didn't clearly state it there), but Nion has the most number of members with him while Duir has the least number. Klaus just had to get into that special rollercoaster ride of doom. Alecdora, Hamon, and Shiren were with Luis. While Letoile and David were with Huath.
Old Ents like Nion who is a million years old have the strongest connection with the earth and is even able to communicate with them through their roots. Their roots can spread almost everywhere so they know what is going on outside the forest even though they don't move. And because of this too, they can travel to many places, in contrast to Duir, who can only go to limited places.
Moreover, Nion was well aware of the situation in the Forest of the Enchanted Beasts in Chapter 5 & 6, and was very furious towards the citizens of Barlow, who chopped the trees of that forest. Nion frequently visits that place, most are his friends. That is why he, along with the other Ents, respects William and Solene for saving that forest.
