THE MISTWOOD FOREST was a strange, enchanted forest that surrounded the Arandom Village. The mana from it was so intense that it could form mists that covered the whole forest like a veil. Anyone who’d dare to enter this forest was declared either insane or just out to end their lives. The strange mana in this forest usually attracted powerful beasts and rare animals, and that was why Solene embarked on a journey to hunt these animals to survive since she came of age.

When others feared the Mistwood Forest, she considered it her second home.

She stopped by her village, where her father and sister greeted her with concern.

“Sis! We were so worried about you!” Mira ran and embraced her tightly.

“How are you, my daughter? We heard the news. Of course we knew, but rest assured that the information didn’t come from us. Our people know better than to sabotage the lives of our precious Magic Knight,” Theron said, scanning her face, looking for any signs that she might not be well. “The kingdom did not treat you kindly, did they?”

She averted her eyes down to her Golden Dawn uniform. It had been weeks since she last wore that robe. And wearing it now after so many people telling her she didn’t deserve it just felt wrong.

“I’m fine, Father,” she said. “Whatever the kingdom says will not waver me. We’re just taking control of the situation to fix William and the squad’s reputation, that’s all.”

“You weren’t responding to my letters so we got worried,” Mira said. “If there’s anything we can do for you…”

“You and Father being safe from the eyes of the kingdom is enough for me. You just have to lay low like me and everything will come back to normal.” She assured them, but deep within, she knew part of it wasn’t true. Even so, if Yuno was able to gain the support of the citizens even though he was also a peasant, then she might be able to change their minds if, in some way, she proved to be worthy of being a member of the Golden Dawn and William’s lover.

“I have received a report that an enemy is lurking in our village. Have you heard of it? Did you notice any signs of an invasion? The report said the Mistwood Forest is involved,” she asked, looking around as a sense of eeriness crept inside her. It was as if eyes were watching from the mist in the forest.

Mira and Theron looked at each other. “We know nothing about it. Is it something we should be concerned about?” Her father said. “No one dares to enter that forest except you, so I don’t know where that information came from.”

Mira shrugged. “Must be a false alarm. I mean, anybody can say that if it’s the Mistwood we’re talking about. Anything can be an enemy there. But the Golden Dawn sent you here… so this must be something serious, right?”

Solene gave them a radiant smile. “There is nothing to be worried about. I’m sure whatever it is, I can handle it.”

“Of course, you will! You are the strongest person I have ever known! And you will raise the name of our village, and you will someday carry on a legacy, and—”
