The Last Goodbye Pt. 1
WILLIAM WALKED in the large, arched halls of the Royal Castle, down to the line of large paintings of the past Wizard Kings starting from Lumiere up to him—the 29th Wizard King. He did not bother looking at his image that looked like heaven and earth collapsed on him. It was taken when he was newly enthroned as the Wizard King, when Solene had left him.
Solene had left him as well now, but… she wasn’t coming back anymore.
William shook the thought away before he’d go back to his room and trap himself in there forever. He turned to a door on the end of the hallway. Inside was a spiral staircase with torches lit up, leading to the floor below. He was greeted by many nobles and Golden Dawn members who were working their way up the stairs, bowing and saluting and smiling softly at him to which he returned only with a nod.
The royal mages guarding the grand door opened it for him. Stepping inside, he squeezed his eyes shut for a moment as the blinding light from the row of windows on his left seeped through the huge hall. He spotted Alecdora at the end of the hall, looking over a tombstone with a stone carving placed on top of it—a bouquet of chrysanthemums on his hand.
His gaze met William’s as he approached, giving him a sorrowful smile as he looked down at the tomb again.
Sophia Schmitmore
3rd Vice Captain of the Golden Dawn
1st Class Senior Magic Knight
Wielder of Ice Magic
Died during the Battle of Life and Death
“A knight who became the shield she once refused to be.
She gave her life so others could live.”
Alecdora’s lips quivered as he read the words engraved at the foot of her statue, placing the bouquet beside her face. Whoever the sculptor was, he deserved praise, for he caught every detail of Sophia’s face: her heart shaped face, thin eyebrows, long and slim nose, small lips which lacked her usual smug smirk or trademark grin, and even the faint freckles across her cheeks.
“What I do not understand, my Lord, is how her younger sister Scarlett, and even those people that died before her were revived by you and Solene’s spell, but not her? Why only her?” His voice was shaking as he uttered the last words, his hands forming into fists.
“I do not know the exact reason why, Alecdora,” William answered. “If I know one thing, it is that Perpetua Forsythe was the one who took her life. That's for sure.”
Alecdora sniffed, turning his head away to not let William see the tear that fell down his cheeks.
William cleared his throat, thinking of something to say that would at least lift the sorrow of Alecdora’s chest. “Everdawn is a spell that acts as a link between the soul and the body. It sends a call to their souls, and if they choose to answer it, they will come back. Perhaps Perpetua’s vortex magic didn't just kill Sophia. Perhaps it severed the connection with her body and soul completely…” William wistfully looked at her tomb. “Everdawn restored every life it could reach… but Sophia’s soul was severed the moment she died. Even if she answered… there's no way back.”
“If there was still a connection then… do you think she would have come back?” Alecdora wiped his tears away.
William put a hand on his shoulder, making him meet his eyes. He flashed him a reassuring smile. “I have no doubt she will, Alecdora. There are too many things left for her to live in this world. I know she left with many regrets. But I can tell, with my roots… her soul naturally passed in the afterlife. She is now in paradise safe—waiting for you.”
