WHO AMONG YOU has betrayed me?” William’s voice thundered throughout the hall as he held up the newspaper to his comrades. “My relationship with Solene is discreet. Only the members of the Golden Dawn know of it, so it would be no doubt that among our ranks did they reveal this information to the press.” His eyes darkened. “I will ask again: Who among you has betrayed my trust?”

“No one, captain!” A chorus of disagreement echoed from the members.

“We confess that we condemn Solene, sir,” said a member. “But we know much more than to wish on your demise as well and expose you!”

Solene glanced around their faces, looking to see any changes in their features. She hated that they had to find out who exposed her relationship with William. She treated them like family. She gave them their trust, yet it was false hope after all, to assume that they would treat her the same.

“William.” She called him, grabbing his arm. “You know your squad better than anyone. You know no one here would betray you. And it's not like you would let a mere news article faze you, is it?”

He stared to look at her whole figure, finding any signs that she was unwell. “I know, Sol. I couldn't care less what the world thinks of our relationship, but I want to protect you from what may happen after this news.”

“Don't worry about me, Will. I'll be fine,” she assured him.

“Yeah, captain. I thought you already know how strong Solene is?” Sophia stepped up. “Her walls are made of steel. Nothing that the kingdom would say will let her crumble.”

Her words and the confidence on Solene's face seemed to convince William, and he apologized to his members for doubting them. “But if I see anyone badmouthing her again, you will face great punishment from me.”

Just then, Marx’s hologram appeared before them, summoning William to the royal capital.

“It's kind of urgent, my Lord,” he said. “The Wizard King calls for a captains meeting this afternoon.”

William let out a sigh. “Alright. I will be there.”

He finally dismissed the squad to do their usual duties. He moved closer to Solene, gently tucking a stray strand of amber hair behind her ear. “Are you sure you're fine?” He whispered.

She gave him a bright smile. “More than anyone.”

“Then I must go. The meeting is yet to start in the afternoon, but I fear we must control the situation we are in right now. The least thing we want is the public’s eyes on our lives, right?”

She sighed, agreeing with him. “Yes, Will. I'm not really concerned about myself, but I am to you. You've got a reputation to protect—” she put a finger on his lips before he spoke, “and before you utter a word of disapproval, I must remind you that if you lose your power and authority because of me, then everything including our relationship will cease. You understand that, right?”

It took a moment of silence before William nodded.

“Then go. I'll be fine here with my friends. I won't do anything that will rage the fire even more,” she said with all her heart as she watched William disappear before her eyes.

But she knew deep within that she was lying.
