Defy the Fates Pt. 8
WILLIAM DID NOT SEE any trace of Solene the next day.
He didn’t know if he would ever get used to this feeling. Emptiness, like someone had carved out his chest, taken his heart, and left a hole so wide it could never be healed again. That was what Solene breaking up with him felt like.
And it hurt to realize that the woman he talked to last night was like a completely different person to the woman he first met.
His heart ached as he looked at what was left of his room. Over the months when Solene and William slept together, Solene had taken the effort of decorating his room and office, placing traces of life in every spot. But now that William was about to move to the Royal Castle as the new Wizard King from now on, his room went back to the way it was before: dull and lifeless.
A knock rang on the door. “Captain?”
“You may come in,” William answered.
Yuno came into his office, keeping his distance, and pledged his salute to him. “You called for me, sir?”
“You might have an idea now why I summoned you here,” he said, walking closer to Yuno, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. He gave him a warm smile. “This is going to be yours from now on.”
“What?” Yuno’s eyebrows shot up. “You are going to hand the Golden Dawn to me? But sir…”
“I have already accepted the Wizard King position, Yuno. The line of succession goes on, and as a Vice Captain, you are meant to succeed me. Someday I know as well, that you are going to be the Wizard King. I have faith that you will lead this squad well.”
Yuno was stunned in his place at first, but there was a certain spark in his golden eyes.
“You are a Grand Magic Knight now,” William added, his smile growing wider. “You are one step closer to achieving your goal.”
He was certain there was something welling in Yuno’s eyes. He blinked, and he was back to his usual emotionless self. “I will not betray your faith, Captain Vangeance. I will lead the Golden Dawn just like you did.”
William breathed, and for once today, the heavy feeling weighing on his chest alleviated just a little. “I believe that the others are waiting for us. They are going to love the news. Shall we go?”
Just as they expected, the whole squad was waiting for them at the assembly hall. William and Yuno stood on the top of the grand staircase, and they were met with loud cheers and applause.
“Congratulations, Captain!”
“The first Wizard King on our squad! You’re so awesome, Captain Vangeance!”
“Yo what the hell? You’re serious?!” Sophia’s voice overpowered their cheers as she along with Mimosa, Letoile, David, Alecdora, and Klaus went to the front. “I can’t believe it! He’s really going to leave us!”
She faked a loud cry that sounded more like a whale wailing, using Klaus’ cape to wipe her imaginary tears. “We’re gonna miss you captain!”
William chuckled. “Rest assured everyone. Do not be disheartened. I will make sure to visit you when I can. And for that, I will make a special announcement on who your next captain is going to be.” He shot a look towards Yuno.
