The next morning arrived with a dull, suffocating silence. The golden hues of dawn seeped through the carved wooden windows, casting intricate shadows on the floor, but Tae felt none of its warmth.
Her eyes burned from the endless crying, her body felt heavy, and her mind was exhausted. She had barely slept, tossing and turning, haunted by thoughts of Jungkook, of his pain, his anger, and the coldness in his eyes when he had told her to leave.
A soft knock on the door broke through the silence.
"Tae?"
It was her mother.
Tae wiped her face quickly, straightening herself before murmuring,
Tae- Come in.
Mrs. Kim entered with a tray, placing it gently on the table. A bowl of warm porridge, a glass of milk, and some dried fruits-the usual breakfast she would prepare when Tae was unwell.
Mrs Kim- You need to eat, Lado. (she said softly, sitting beside her daughter)
Tae nodded absently but didn't move. Her gaze was distant, fixed on the wooden floor.
Mrs. Kim sighed, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind Tae's ear.
Mrs Kim- I know things are difficult right now, but you have to take care of yourself. For Hyunnie... and for the little one inside you.
Tae's fingers instinctively pressed against her belly. How ironic-she had always fought to protect others, yet she had failed to protect her own family.
Tae- Did Bapu-sa sleep? (she asked after a long pause)
Mrs. Kim hesitated before answering,
Mrs Kim- A little. He spent most of the night watching over Hyunnie.
Tae closed her eyes. She didn't blame him. Her father had always been protective of her, and after what had happened last night, his anger wasn't unjustified.
But he didn't understand Jungkook. Not the way she did.
Jungkook wasn't a cruel man. He wasn't heartless. If he had raised his hand... if he had told her to leave... there was a reason.
Tae swallowed, glancing at her mother.
Tae- Bapu-sa won't listen to me, will he?
Mrs. Kim sighed.
Mrs Kim- Not right now. His anger needs time to settle.
Tae nodded, lowering her gaze.
A small voice suddenly interrupted the quiet moment.
"Amma..."
Tae looked up to see Hyunnie standing in the doorway, rubbing his sleepy eyes. His hair was messy, his tiny hands gripping the edge of his kurta.
Tae's chest tightened.
Her little boy.
Opening her arms, she called softly,
Tae- Come here, golu.
Without hesitation, Hyunnie ran to her, climbing onto the bed and snuggling into her lap. Tae held him tightly, burying her face in his soft curls.
Hyun- Nana-sa said we are staying here. (he murmured, looking up at her) But when will we go back to Baba?
Tae felt her throat close up.
She didn't have an answer.
All she could do was hold her son tighter, pressing a kiss to his forehead.
