The gentle clink of bangles and scent of mogra filled the Jeon Residence's corridors as preparations for Krishn Janmashtmi were in full swing. Sumi, her dupatta tied tightly around her waist, stood atop a small stool as she hung strings of marigold flowers over the carved wooden arch of the pooja room.
Beside her, Jiminee carefully placed the silver palna-the ceremonial cradle-in the center of the room, spreading a fine muslin cloth inside it before gently laying the idol of baby Krishna, adorned with peacock feathers and pearl jewelry.
Tae stepped in with a brass thali filled with ghee diyas, turmeric-stained rice, and freshly prepared sweets. She placed it on the side and looked around the room that now glowed in divine festivity.
Jasoda Kaki sat on a gadda nearby, directing the young girls, adjusting the swing, and scolding Sumi lightheartedly for misplacing the kanha ji's bansuri.
Amber, Jinie, and Jenna joined in soon. All dressed in vibrant sarees, they brought in more sweets and decorative torans. The women worked in harmony-traditional and modern blending in a rhythmic dance of age-old devotion and joyful chatter.
By dinner, the house smelled of ghee tadka, incense sticks, and a hint of sandalwood. Everyone gathered around the large dining area, their plates filled with traditional delicacies-puri, sabzi, halwa, and lassi. There was laughter, light teasing, and joyful exchanges about the upcoming midnight aarti.
Later that night;
The pooja room shimmered under the light of oil lamps and cotton wicks, their flames flickering like little hearts beating in anticipation of Nandlal's arrival. The marble floor had been washed clean, with rangoli patterns made of powdered colors greeting the divine moment. The men-Jungkook, Jung-guk, Namjoon, Yoongi, and Hobi-sat on the side, dressed in traditional dhoti-kurtas, sipping on cardamom-flavored milk.
Jungkook sat a little apart from the rest, his fingers tapping silently on his knee, his gaze distant. The smile that should've adorned his face this festive evening was absent. His mood, still clouded by Tae's earlier rejection, hadn't lifted.
He watched his wife from afar. Tae was seated near the idol, her head slightly bowed, eyes heavy but face calm. She hadn't noticed him staring, or perhaps she had-she just chose not to respond.
Jinie got up with a bright grin, tugging Jenna and Amber's hands.
Jinie- Come on, let's dance! It's raas leela night after all. How can the gopis stay still when Krishna is born?
Amber laughed,
Amber- Finally, someone said it! (she grabbed Sumi's hand, and before long, the women were in the center, swaying in graceful circles, their ghagras fanning like flowers in bloom)
Jiminee joined too, spinning like a soft breeze, her eyes momentarily catching Tae's.
Jm- Mami-sa, come na!
Tae smiled but shook her head,
Tae- I'll just watch you all.
From the side, Jungkook watched the other husbands chuckling at their wives' enthusiasm. Even the children-Mani, Hyunnie-were giggling, clapping along to the Krishna bhajans.
As the clock strike at 12;
The soft buzzing stopped. Silence filled the room as Jung-guk stood, lifting the shankh to his lips. A deep, resonant sound reverberated through the air, washing the space with sacred vibrations. The atmosphere transformed from playful to reverent, a hush of devotion embracing the room.
