Chapter 18: Appointment
Mia's POV
I walked through the parking lot of my doctor's office and saw a familiar lanky figure leaning against the stone wall. He was wearing black skinny jeans, a black graphic t-shirt, a black leather jacket, and all black converse. I saw Andy holding something to his mouth and then lowered it, white smoke billowing out of his mouth. I walked closer to him and he smiled at me.
"Hey," he said, shoving the item into his pocket.
"What's that?" I questioned.
"My vape," he said quietly, kicking his toe against the ground. "Smoking is the hardest of my habits to quit."
"Oh," I said quietly. I'm constantly learning new things about him. "You ready?" I questioned and he nodded. We walked into the doctor's office and I checked in while Andy found us a seat. I wandered over to him and sat down, rubbing my growing belly. Andy tapped his foot, his eyes wandering around the room as we sat in silence.
"Mia Palmer," the nurse called. I stood up and walked over to her, Andy following me. The nurse smiled at me and led us out of the waiting room. The nurse took my height and weight and then led me to a room. She grabbed a few of my vitals and asked me a few questions. She went into a cabinet and opened it, pulling out a paper gown and laying it on the exam table. "Go ahead and put that on, the tech will be in momentarily," she said and left.
"Do you want me to step out?" Andy asked.
"Please," I said and he nodded, walking out into the hallway. I quickly undressed, piling my clothes onto a nearby chair. I pulled on the paper gown and climbed onto the exam table, draping the thin sheet over my legs. "You're good!" I called and I heard the door open. Andy came back in, keeping his eyes locked on the ground. He sat in the chair next to the exam table and leaned on his elbow, chewing on one of his fingernails. I thought it was funny, the thought of him being so nervous to see me without proper clothes. We definitely didn't get in this position with my clothes on.
I heard a knock and then the door opened. An ultrasound tech walked in, pulling an ultrasound machine behind her. She sat down and turned on the machine, pulling on a pair of gloves. She navigated with the transducer, a black and white scene appearing on the screen.
"There's your baby," she said happily, turning the screen so Andy and I could see. She pointed out the small white figure, tracing the shape of the baby. I felt a breath catch in my throat, blinking away a few tears. I looked over at Andy and he was smiling from ear to ear, his eyes fixed on the screen. The ultrasound tech clicked a button and a whooshing sound filled the room, mixed with a thumping sound. "And there's your baby's heartbeat," she said.
I felt my heart swell as I listened to the sound of my baby's heartbeat. It was fast and loud, taking up any empty space in the room. I felt tears roll down my face and I wiped them away. I have another person inside of me, a life that I'm responsible for. I'm going to be a mother. All of the realities hit me at once. I looked over at Andy again and he had tears rapidly running down his face. The smile on his face was bigger, if that was even possible.
The tech printed out a picture of the ultrasound and handed it to me. I examined every inch of the picture as the tech cleaned up and turned off the machine. An eerie silence fell on the room again. The tech said goodbye and left with the machine.
"Do you want to get a closer look?" I asked Andy, holding out the ultrasound picture to him. He grabbed it and held it in his trembling hands. He let out a long sigh before looking up at me, his blue eyes now glassy with tears.
"We're having a baby," he said quietly.
"We're having a baby," I confirmed with a giggle. He handed the picture back to me and leaned back in the chair, wiping his eyes with the heels of his hands.
"Sorry for my blubbering," he chuckled.
"It's okay, I think it's sweet," I said and he just smiled shyly at me. We heard another knock at the door and my doctor walked in.
"Hello Mia," my doctor greeted with a smile and then looked at Andy. "Who is this?" she questioned.
"Hi, Andy Biersack, I'm the baby's father," Andy greeted, shaking the doctor's hand.
"Nice to meet you," she smiled and then washed her hands. She sat on her stool and talked with me, doing a short exam once she had received some answers from me. "Well, you look like you're progressing well, right on track. I don't see any area for concern. We'll have you come in next month for another appointment and we will be able to do a gender scan if you want. Please don't hesitate to call with any questions. Have a good day Mia, Andy," the doctor smiled as she left.
"I'll, uhm, be in the waiting room," Andy said, getting up and leaving the room. I took off the paper gown and placed it in the disposal bin. I quickly got dressed and left the room. I made my next appointment and scanned the room for Andy. He stood up from his chair and followed me out of the building. He dug his vape out of his pocket and held it to his mouth, blowing the smoke up towards the sky. He walked me to the car and I dug my keys out of my small purse.
"Uhm, my next appointment is December 20th," I told him.
"I'll be there," he smiled. "Oh, by the way, I'm going on tour in January and it goes through the end of February," he informed me and I nodded. Why did the thought of him leaving make me sad? "I told my band and my manager though, and they've agreed that we can lay low for a bit after this tour."
"You don't have to do that," I said, shaking my head.
"I want to be there for this baby and I want to be there for you. I barely even want to go on this tour, but it was already scheduled."
"Okay," I said quietly.
"I'll see you later, Mia," he smiled.
"Bye Andy," I said as I watched him walked towards his car. I got into my car and let out a sigh before beginning the drive home.
