Evan vividly remembered what Mr. Ollivander had told him initially, about the hidden secret in his wand.
He did not wish for him to reveal those things at this time either. After all, they were too startling.
Ollivander had disclosed to Evan that the core of his wand was Thestral Tail Hair. This was an intricate substance, only mastered by a sorcerer capable of facing death.
Mastery over death easily conjured thoughts of surprise, demise, and misfortune.
Beyond these evident negative thoughts, Evan didn't fully grasp what Mr. Ollivander had meant back then.
However, after thoroughly studying numerous ancient magic books including Wandlore, he realized how remarkable it was to use Thestral Tail Hair as the essence of the wand, which was not as simple as the literal meaning of "mastering death."
Under the influence of a mysterious power, only those who had directly witnessed death could see Thestrals.
The Thestral Tail Hair that contained this power could not be seamlessly integrated into the wand through traditional craftsmanship.
In all the Wandlore books Evan had read, Thestral Tail Hair was believed to be the most challenging substance to use in wand making.
Even if the wand could be created, it could not be wielded by wizards.
In essence, the mysterious power within Thestral Tail Hair hindered the transmission of the wizard's magical power, making it highly unstable.
Evan was unaware of how his wand had been made, as its mere creation contradicted many fundamental Wandlore theories.
In addition to his wand, the only wand in the world using Thestral Tail Hair as its core was the Elder Wand in Dumbledore's possession. It was said that the wand was crafted by Death itself from the elder tree on the riverbank and measured 15 inches.
By reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard, it was uncovered that the Elder Wand had infinite potential and only submitted to the most powerful wizard.
It was also known as the Wand of Death or the Wand of Destiny. In magical history, it featured in many famous duels.
The Elder Wand was the least understanding of sentiments, the coldest and cruelest wand, solely considering the user's skill.
Other wands had a certain degree of loyalty to their owners, so even if defeated, as long as the owners kept them, the wands would serve them, not relinquishing their owners easily.
This trait was especially evident in wands made of unicorn hair, which remained loyal to their owners. If a wand were allowed to choose a competent person, it would prefer the original owner.
However, the ancient wand was only loyal to skill; it completely lacked "emotions" or attachment. It went with strength, so defeating the original owner meant winning the wand.
This was one of the Elder Wand's characteristics. It was also reflected in Evans wand, even more dominantly.
In the past two years, Evan had discovered that no one but him could control and use his wand.
It was impossible to even cast the simplest magic with it, and it resisted any other wielder.
The most glaring example was when Peter Pettigrew once used Evan's wand to try to kill him. However, Evan could clearly see that Peter's Killing Curse had no effect. When he attempted to cast magic again, he suddenly dropped the wand and fled. His face was filled with horror, seemingly scared by something!
Something must have occurred. Peter Pettigrew must have felt an immensely potent force from Evan's wand, the kind of power that could evoke the deepest memories from his heart, causing him to turn and flee outright.
Evan didn't know what power that was. In fact, he had never studied his wand.
At certain times, especially when using deep dark magic involving soul power, he could sense something new in this wand, something that wanted to break the wand's confines and emerge from within. This was truly dreadful.
Evan had never used the Elder Wand, but he didn't believe that Thestral Tail Hair had this effect.
Of course, all of this remained a mystery and was not impossible.
As Ollivander had just stated, Wandlore was one of the most complex and mysterious branches of magic. It involved the origin of magical power in wizards, and many theories had been passed down through generations, exclusive to wand makers, not truly recorded anywhere.
This was also the main reason why excellent wand makers had always had a history of thousands of years.
"This wand is the only thing my great-grandfather bequeathed. Believe me, the achievements of my great-grandfather are what every wand maker can only aspire to. He accomplished great things!" Mr. Ollivander gazed at the wand intently and continued softly, "Mr. Mason, the wand he left has been passed down through generations, not choosing any wizard until it found you."
He moved his right hand which held the wand gently downward, and a silver crescent-shaped light appeared at the wand's tip.
"This wand is well maintained, and its characteristics have not changed significantly!" Mr. Ollivander said, returning the wand to Evan. "Remember, Mr. Mason, it is the wand that chooses the wizard. Someday you will understand what I mean. Please make good use of this wand; it will be your best assistant."
Upon hearing his words, Evan felt even more confused.
Mr. Ollivander did not comment on his wand as he did with the others, nor did he mention its material and core.
He simply looked at Evan in silence, and his milky white pupils gave him a chilling sensation.
He then turned and nodded to Dumbledore.
"Thank you, Garrick!" Dumbledore stood up at the judges' table and addressed Evan, his friends, and the champions. "You may now return to your lessons... or perhaps it would be quicker to just go to dinner, as it's about to finish!"
"Has it finally ended?" Bagman also stood up. While Mr. Ollivander was inspecting the wands, he had been nodding off, but now he was extremely excited. "Photos, Dumbledore, photos. All judges and champions can have a photo together. The four kids can come too. What do you think, Rita?"
"Yes, let's do those first!" said Rita Skeeter, whose eyes were once again on Evan and Harry. "And then maybe some individual photos."
The photographs took a long time. Madame Maxime cast shadows over everyone else wherever she stood. The room was too small, and the photographer couldn't back up enough to include her in the frame.
Finally, she had to sit as the others surrounded her.
Karkaroff kept twirling his beard around his finger to give it an extra curl.
Krum was hiding, partially concealed in the back of the group, as if he wasn't comfortable with the camera.
After the group photo was taken, Rita Skeeter insisted on separate photos of everyone.
In fact, she meant to take individual photos of Evan and Harry.
Evan ignored her and ushered Harry and Hermione out of the room.
