Gerald looked up from his computer screen at the man before him. He took his reading glasses from his eyes and said precisely," So you're leaving us for fame and fortune, are you? I know you won that contest on Rebel. Well , co won it with Bliss Jones. Congratulations. I don't think I told you that last night. "
Lyle smiled. He seemed more relaxed than Gerald had ever seen him before. Relaxed and more confident. He was glad. He liked the man.
" No. The prize money is nice and will come in handy definitely. And, I do plan to sing on Rebel's next album but..... I don't want it as a career. Going on the show was just fun to me. Angel actually dared me if you want to know the truth. I've been in therapy. Discussing what happened that day in my classroom. Diamond. Lewis. I'm not saying I'll ever forget it. I won't but I don't want it to change my entire life. I am not a singer. I am a teacher. It's not just a job to me. It's me. So I am going back to work next week. If I can. "
Gerald's face spread with an enormous smile of pleasure as he rubbed his hands together with glee. " Yes ! Of course you can. This is the best news I've heard in ages. Almost as good as when Alfred said yes to my proposal of marriage. And , of course it is not just a job. Teaching, educating these young minds out there, is not a job that you clock in and out from. It's a calling. It's a privilege. That's trite, I know , but I'm a trite man. "
Lyle smiled back at him before nodding. " Then I must be one too because I agree. Being a teacher is all I have ever wanted to do in my life. I love my students. I miss them. I miss Barrington. "
Gerald stood up and strode over to him in his expensive track suit and running shoes, his hand extended out to him. "And, Barrington Academy also missed you. Welcome back home, Mr. Anderson. "
Lyle laughed softly. " It's good to be back."
