Jamal was in the middle of telling Jimmy about his occupational therapist and how condescending he found him when all of a sudden he heard Jimmy's phone ring. His heart dropped when he saw him pull it out to answer it and say," Yeah , Jeff , what's up ? "
Who was Jeff ? , he thought as he moved about nervously in his chair next to the bed that Jimmy sat on. Then he kicked himself mentally. It was obviously his boyfriend. His partner. His friend with benefits. Something. Yeah. Jimmy swore he wasn't gay but he had good gaydar. He knew gay when he saw it. Jimmy was gay but in the closet for whatever reason. Maybe that family of his. They didn't sound too tolerant from what Jimmy told him about them. Especially his grandfather. And, he was too gorgeous to be single and free. Of course he had someone. Someone that was better than him with his memory issues and brain injury. The only thing he had going for him was his brains and now he didn't really have that anymore. Thanks to that woman.
" What ? ," Jimmy said as he shifted his toned tee shirt and jeans wearing body slightly. " For real ? Sorry, man , I forgot. Yeah. I got off work a while ago and decided to come visit with my friend. You know Jamal. But I'll leave now and come meet you. I got my old bike so. What? Yeah , you can pick me up if you want? I didn't know you had a car. A limo ? Wow. Bougie, dude. Ok. I'll meet you out front. See ya. "
Jamal shouldn't have felt as disappointed as he did but disappointed he was. Jimmy had just arrived not too long and he was leaving already? Of course he was though, he told himself. Why would Jimmy want to hang around a glorified nursing home and listen to him whine ? He rubbed his head which was starting to ache badly. Worse was this guy sounded rich with a limo and all. Even if Jimmy was interested in him what could he possibly offer? Nothing. That was what. His brother Justin had more options. At least he would actually graduate college one day. Hell even his baby sister would go far with this scholarship to Barrington Academy.
" You're leaving? "
Jimmy grinned in a self conscious way. "Yeah. I completely forgot. I was supposed to meet.... someone. Gonna head to DC and check out a new jazz club just opened up. Sorry about that. It totally slipped my mind. You know me. I'm dumb. "
" You not..... dumb ," Jamal said faintly.
Jimmy twinkled his eyes at him. " Sure I am. Didn't even graduate high school. Now you're smart. And , don't give me gruff about brain injury yadda yadda. You're still smart. You remember more than I ever knew. Anyway I'll see you later. I'll come by tomorrow. And, tell that therapist dude to treat you better or I'll kick his ass , ok ? "
Then , to Jamal's amazement , Jimmy leaned over and pressed a soft kiss against his cheek. Even more amazingly Jamal did something he never would have before the accident. He deliberately turned his head until his lips were against the other boy's mouth. Jimmy's surprised mouth. For just a second it felt like Jimmy was really into the kiss until he broke it off and immediately jumped up with red spots growing on his tanned cheeks.
" Well , I guess I better go. See you tomorrow, Jamal. "
Then he was up off the bed and out of the room so fast he very nearly ran into Lewis as he was coming into the room.
Lewis widened his eyes and exclaimed," Wow ! What's his rush ? "
Jamal shrugged and shook his head. He turned to the window and stared out of it. " Your father called on the phone. He sounded like he was worried about something. He wants you to call him back. Something about you talking to a judge one day or something. "
