Ariel sat up in her bed in Nicholas's guest room, a wicker tray propped upon her blanket covered lap containing pancakes, over easy eggs and bacon as well as a glass of orange juice. In her hand she held a cell phone into which she spoke," Jeff , exactly how do you know of Prince Cedric? "
Jeff , on the other end , spoke into the speaker phone of his own cell phone that rested on a nearby table as he rode an elaborate exercise bike in his family's renovated basement. " Probably the same way you know of Nicholas. The man who you are marrying after just plopping my and Alan's father in a hole at the cemetery. May he rest in hell , the old bastard."
Ariel snapped," This isn't about me. This is about you and your life. I want to know exactly what you plan to do with yourself since you won't be returning to school. I am still your mother. "
Jeff rolled his eyes. " My friends are not your responsibility. And, you don't need to know details about them. Concentrate on my brother who hasn't returned my calls and texts in a while. Is Alan okay? "
Ariel sipped at the juice, mindful of her missing finger. " Alan is fine. He's doing well enough at his physical therapy and he is demanding , yes , actually demanding, to return to Barrington next week. He's been quiet, yes, but because he's spending a lot of time writing on his computer. I think it's homework for school. Now are you saying you are friends with the prince? How did you meet him? And , what are you going to do with your life, son? "
Jeff stopped suddenly on the bike and reached for a close by towel to wipe the sweat off his face. " I have a lot of friends. I meet them in a variety of places. And, my future is going to be quarterback for your supposed to be husband's new football team. I need to be in supreme shape for preseason next year. "
Ariel pursed her lips with displeasure. She nibbled on her eggs. " Are you serious about this football business? I thought you wanted to be a doctor. Like....."
Jeff stood up and walked over to the table where he picked up his half empty protein shake to down in two long gulps. " You mean you and Gordon wanted me to be a doctor. That was never my dream. Playing football isn't either but I enjoy it and it'll be beneficial for a while. Besides I sign the contract next week so get used to it, Mom. "
