" Thank you so much for driving me back home , Vance , " Nettie Jean said in a very soft and gentle sounding voice as she rode in the passenger side of the brand new jeep of the funeral home owner. " I just don't think I could handle any more stress today. Nor could my poor poor unborn baby. My brother in law ..... was very ..... special to me. We were very.... close. "
Vance Chesterfield looked briefly over at the woman beside him and then back at the street ahead. He smiled slightly. " I can tell. Surprisingly , you are taking it far better than your sister but Mrs. Sal... Simms seems to be a very.... a very sturdy lady indeed. "
Nettie Jean laughed out loud with a twinkle in her eyes. " You mean , a bitch ! " Then she abruptly slapped her hands over her open mouth. " I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. My Ma always did say my mouth ran way ahead of my brain at times. "
Vance laughed softly. " It is quite alright , my dear. I do see so many different sorts of people in my line of work. Of course , I grew up in it. My grandfather and father and uncle were the Chesterfields in the business before myself. Well .... my uncle is still there but he's not that well lately.... and , there's my brother but..... anyway I am pretty much the face of the business now. As it were. "
" That must be so stressful for you , Vance , honey , but I know you can handle it. " She reached out to stroke his arm gently. " You seem to be such a strong sure minded stable man. I like those qualities in a gentleman. "
Vance flushed red at her words. He stammered out , " TTthank you , Nettie Jean. You are very kind. Truly a nice and decent soul. See here ? Are you at all hungry ? I've been meaning to check out this little deli not far away that just opened. I will treat of course. "
Nettie Jean smiled widely and with much contentment as she settled back in the car seat. " Why , yes , Vance , sugarplum , I do believe I could eat a little bit. I never did enjoy funeral food that much. "
Vance laughed heartily as he said , " You know what ? Neither have I ! In fact , I hate funeral foods."

" So , " Marcus asked as he sat down in a chair beside Spencer and reached out to tickle the nose of little Miracle that her father held in his arms. " You're really running for mayor ? Against that fake ass so called minister ? "
Spencer nodded. " Yes. I'm running on a pro gun control and pro disability rights platform. I did research on the number of homicides and attempted homicides in the area and I was......"
" Yes , " Marcus said softly and smoothly as he leaned a little closer to Spencer , " that is really really distressing. I do think I would be interested in doing some volunteering for your campaign. I look forward to working closely with you on these issues , Spencer. "
" That would be wonderful , " Spencer began to say as Sol Klein came over with Winston and Aiden behind him. Sol said ," Hey , Doc Spencer , you ready to go ? Mr. Norris has to get back to work and Mr. Arnett said something about needing to discuss campaign business with you. And , I have to work on an English paper and science project plus my lines for the play which is next week. "
Spencer smiled slightly. " Sure. We can leave now. "
As they all drifted away from him the smooth smile abruptly slid off Marcus's face. Marcus thought , Fucking stupid kid. He hated damn annoying kids.
