" I can't believe they cheated my beautiful babies the way they did at that cheap looking beauty pageant," LuLu complained as she sat at the kitchen table with her husband Jonah , son Jimmy, father Bubba Joe and sister Nettie Jean. The babies sat in their high chairs banging on the front trays and flinging oatmeal at each other. The family pig Porky reclined under the table waiting for a trace of bacon or sausage to be dropped his way.

Nettie Jean laughed  ," That was funny. Way you went on and on about them babies of yours winning. And they didn't even get third place. What a hoot. "

Nettie Jean's foot slipped out of her bunny slipper and slid over to her brother in law Jonah's pants leg where she ran it up and down much to his contentment as he smiled slightly.

Bubba Joe yawned. He had had a late night yesterday. He spent most of the day moving poor old Nance back to her daughter's empty townhouse to stay since her ungrateful granddaughter and her arrogant looking husband had moved with their ugly baby to his mother's house. It was hard as hell to open the door with his maxed out credit card as it was , he mused as he stuffed the remainder of his bacon in his mouth. Poor Nance had a hard life. The government was giving her hell too about her tourist visa running out soon. Now at her slightly advanced age she had to get her a job cooking up food for spoiled kids at that rich  Woodward College just so she could get her a work visa. Shame. If he wasn't still married to that betraying old hag of his he just might be tempted to run off with Nance to Vegas. She was a fine woman with a lot of cushion like he liked 'em. " I think the grandbabies had a good chance. I seen that Miracle with the long last name. She ain't so pretty. And, the boy.... whoever heard of a boy in a beauty pageant? He probably gonna be light in his loafers one day. Trust me. Speaking of which anyone heard from Sol lately? That boy too snobby now to come see his real family. "

Jimmy rolled his eyes and tried to ignore his family. He hadn't slept much himself last night what with getting in late from the jazz club with Jeff who had wanted him to stay the night at his family's house but he had said no. Mainly because he kept thinking about Jamal kissing him yesterday. And , wondering why.

Jonah focused his eyes on his step son and said gruffly," Boy , when you get paid? "

" Next Friday. "

Jonah snorted ," Good. Cause you owe rent on your room and board. Plus cell phone service. Nobody has a free ride here. Even Bubba Joe. He does a little Door Dash when his car starts up. "

Bubba Joe laughed roughly. " Yep. If it don't I just borrow the neighbor kid bike. The funny one across the street that runs around saying he answers to they and them. Now ain't that no there proper English ? I puts it back before he even notices. Not that I'm scared of him or his daddy who look like he fall down if you blow on him wrong. What kind name is Aiden? "

They all ignored Bubba Joe's rambling as Nettie Jean dropped her hand under the table to Jonah's knee where she proceeded to squeeze it gently. Then she ran it up and down his leg as he suddenly coughed.

LuLu looked at her husband sharply. " Why should Jimmy pay rent? I don't see my sister paying anything but she does a lot of eating. I'd rather have Jimmy back in school anyway. Or at least get his GED. As for Nettie Jean..... I want half that prize money you won off Rebel. Even though it was only for second prize. "

Nettie Jean pursed her bright red painted lips at her older sister. " Can't do it, sissy. I am putting it all in my singing career. "

LuLu looked at her in disbelief and suspicion. " What singing career? You got another gig singing Happy Birthday at the Chuck E Cheese? If I remembered correct you scared two kids and the rat back then. "

Nettie Jean lifted her chin. " I may not have won first prize but Rebel said I had talent. I'm gonna try to get me some singing gigs around the DC area. You all got bars and clubs here. " She looked at Jonah with a big grin on her pretty face. " And , Jonah here said he was gonna manage me. So we gonna have to spend a lot of time together. A lot of time. "
