Spencer had discovered he needed a certain amount of signatures from Hyattsville residents to get on the ballot for mayor so after talking to Nancy ( or , frankly listening as she talked on and on and on in her too terminally perky and energetic by coffee and energy drink manner ) he had gotten himself and Miracle ready to go outside to collect signatures.
Maybe people knew that their beloved democratic mayor Nancy Woo was currently running for county executive and that nobody had cropped up to run against the Republican opponent of whom they really didn't want representing them.
Maybe everyone just found his year old daughter in her bouncy ponytails, cozy pullover sweater with falling leaves design scattered all across the front and little blue denim jeans connected to his wheelchair by a small secure blue leash too adorable for words.
Maybe they just felt sympathy, or DuBuis's God help him , pity for him when they saw him seated in the motorized wheelchair with a young child and a clipboard of paper and pen.
He didn't know what it was but oddly enough once he had finished talking to people and explaining who he was and why he needed their signatures on the application petition and exactly what his platform for the office was he was oddly astonished to discover that he had reached his target in almost record time. What was the odds of that ? , he marveled as he and a happy to be with her Papa Miracle came back out of the city clerk Wilma Flintstein's office where he had dropped off the application and petition in a very practical fashion. The woman , who did look quite old , even more than Bernard and Alice Rose but he doubted was old enough to have known the alleged Jesus as a child , had accepted all of it with amazing competency and then said to him sternly," All done, you're on the ballot, welcome to the race, you have my sympathy, get out".
Miracle was getting unusually grumpy because they had been moving almost non stop since they left the house and she was hungry for lunch so she tugged at his arm, saying," Papa , want French fries ! Want Happy Meal ! Want toy! "
Spencer smiled fondly at his daughter and said," I know you're hungry, darling one. So am I actually. Let Papa make one call and then we'll head back home where we'll eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with cookies and milk before nap time. Alright? "
Then he pulled out his phone and dialed up one of his brothers. The one he still couldn't believe sometimes that he accepted as not only a brother but a friend. A surprisingly good friend actually.
Winston Arnett - Jacobs answered in a fairly dejected voice," Hello. "
Spencer was perplexed by his brother's downcast tone. " Are you alright, Winston? You don't seem well. What did Joe do now? Is Faith still complaining to you about bed rest?"
Winston replied," None of .... that. I got a response from the bar association about my ... dis.... disbarment being overturned. They said no. Maybe Uncle Bernard is right. And , my father. Maybe I am just useless. "
As they continued on down the sidewalk towards the direction of their home Spencer spoke on his cell phone and kept an eye on his chortling daughter. " Don't be ridiculous. You have an enormous amount of use. Especially to me right now. You said you used to assist on your father's political campaigns in a volunteer fashion and you also told me you have a minor in political science. "
" Yes. For all the good it does me. What about it , Spencer? Where are you? I'm actually in my car outside your house now. I thought we could have coffee and talk. "
" I'm headed back to my house now. Should be there in a few minutes perhaps. Maybe a little longer. But, it does me good. I need your assistance at the moment. "
" Assistance? On what? "
" I am currently running for mayor of Hyattsville on the Democratic ticket. I just turned in my application materials to an odd but very nice older lady. And, I need you to be my campaign manager. Will you do it? "
Winston was stunned into silence almost immediately. Spencer was afraid his brother had lost his power to speak once again until he finally said," Sure. Why not? But you'll eventually regret it. "
Spencer was puzzled. " Running for office or having you as a campaign manager? "
Winston laughed. He seemed a little more cheerful than when Spencer had called. "Most likely both. "
