" Senator Reilly Arnett's office," the secretary said in a very crisp and efficient voice. " Who may I say is calling ? "

Spencer sat in his wheelchair on the other side of phone in his living room watching Miracle playing in the playpen with her dolls and learning blocks. He swallowed deeply. Maybe this was a mistake but he couldn't think of anyone else with the type of governmental authority needed for an issue like this. He coughed in nervousness and said hesitantly," I'm..... his son. Is he available? "

The secretary also hesitated for just the briefest moment but still a hesitation. Then she said firmly," One second, Mr. Arnett , I will see if the senator is available. Please hold. "

And , held he did. For the next few minutes he held as he listened to the same Mozart tune over and over again to the point he could play it by heart if he had to. He very nearly hung up until suddenly he heard an arrogant and amused voice say ," What the hell do you want, Winston? I'm not forgiving you after the scandal you created with the paternity disaster. I can't believe I reared such a nit wit."

Spencer bristled slightly. The whole Rebecca paternity business was not Winston's most shining moment but his half brother was hardly a nitwit. " It is not Winston. This is Dr.  Spencer Norland - Lane. ".

Senator Reilly Arnett sat back in his enormous black leather chair behind his desk , surprise building on his lined handsome face. " Well , well , well. The son that I had with my now wife Doris. The one who wouldn't claim me as his father. Until now. What do you want? I know you want something. Otherwise you wouldn't call me father. That term is reserved for him , isn't it ?"

Spencer sighed. Yes. This had been a mistake. But he might as well see it all the way through. What did he have to lose?

" I'm calling to inquire what you in senate intend to do about the issue of gun control. "

Reilly laughed heartily. " Gun control? My policy on gun control is the second amendment is king in our country. That's the constitution, Spencer. You're a smart one. Go read it. The Democrats want to take away the right to bear arms from law-abiding Americans. I strive to protect those rights. Now if you want to discuss a pressing issue let's try this increasingly unstable border situation......"

Spencer interjected with," No. Let's stick with the gun control issue. I have compiled statistics and facts on the number of gun related homicides and attempted homicides in not only the state of Maryland but also the country. We are the only country that is of a civilized bend which is so violent. I recognize the value of the constitution but people's lives have value as well. Our lives have more value than mere guns.....".

" I'm a busy man, Spencer. I don't have time to discuss this nonsense with you. You know my position and......"

" So , you're not willing to discuss this rationally and even think about sponsorship of a strong gun control bill ? "

Reilly laughed again. " No. No need. The reason we have violence is the border situation. Close the borders, less danger. See ?  Issue fixed. Look. I'm going to give you some advice. If you are really serious about this guns business then don't bother me with it. Run for office and sponsor your own bill. " Then he laughed even harder as he hung up.

Spencer swallowed back a curse word because he remembered his daughter was in the room. Then as fury roared in his ears he dialed a number he had but never found reason to use.

" Mayor Nancy Woo. How can I help you? "

Spencer said abruptly," Nancy, this is Spencer. I think I am interested in what we talked about last night. I think I want to run for your seat as mayor. And , I want my platform to be strong gun control and disability rights. "
