The perfect smile

TAYLOR'S POV

I had always been passionate about dentistry. As a child, I dreamed of making people smile, not just with my music but also by helping them achieve healthy teeth. I built my practice with love and care, and I adored every minute of it, until I started dating Jake. Jake was charming, witty, and, most importantly, a fellow dentist. We met at a dental conference and bonded over our shared love for peds and the thrill of perfecting a patient's smile. Everything was going well, I had never felt more supported in my career. But there was a secret lurking beneath my own smile... I was terrified of the dentist.

It seemed ludicrous, especially since I was one. But every time I had to sit in that chair, I felt like a kid again, helpless and anxious. I had managed to keep this from Jake, brushing off any questions about my dental visits with a lighthearted laugh. One Friday evening, after a long week at the clinic, Jake and I were cuddled up on the couch, binge-watching our favorite show. I felt a sharp twinge in my left molar, and I winced. Jake looked over, concern etched across his face.

"What's wrong?" he asked, pausing the show. "You okay?"

"Just a little soreness," I replied, waving it off. "Probably just a bit of gum irritation. I'll be fine."

"You should let me take a look," he insisted, his dentist instincts kicking in. "When was your last checkup?"

"Uh, a while ago," I stammered, mentally calculating how long it had actually been.

Too long.

Jake's eyes narrowed playfully. "Taylor, you can't skip checkups. I'm going to make you an appointment at my office."

"Really, it's not that big of a deal!" I protested, trying to keep my tone light. "I'll handle it."

"Nope. It's settled. Tomorrow morning, 10 a.m., my office." He grinned, clearly pleased with himself.

I sighed, knowing I had lost the battle. "Fine. But just a quick check. I promise I'll be good."
