It was the summer of 1943. Jackie had just turned fourteen. She had returned for the summer as she had the year before. This summer was different though. Something was in the air and it was strange. It lingered all summer making all of the Kennedys feel uneasy. Mrs. Kennedy had even mentioned to Jackie once that she never slept a full night that whole summer. One night that Jackie was staying over at the compound as Jean's guest, the phone rang in the middle of the night. "Who would be calling at this hour?" Jackie asked Jean as the phone screeched an awful ring.

"Go to sleep, Jackie. I'm sure it's fine," Jean yawned.

No sooner had Jean spoke when Jackie heard a cry and then Mrs. Kennedy's voice shakily calling, "Joe! Joe!"

Jackie ran out of Jean's bedroom, "What's happened, Mrs. Kennedy? Are you alright?"

She stared numbly at Jackie and Joe as tears fell from her eyes. She then took a deep breath choked out, "The PT-109 was sunk."
