Chapter 65
*Meredith POV*Before every trauma, before every disaster, and before every death; there was a before. There was a time before the worst possible catastrophe happened to you. There was a time when you were flying high on top of the world. There was a time before you fell a long way down. We take these before's for granted, not knowing that this was before the worst imaginable pain ever.
My heart drops into my stomach.
Derek calls me to Trauma 1. I see Alex and he looks scared. He looks so scared. "There's no signs of head Trauma, we need Torres to check out this arm but he's all yours now. I'm going to go check on Wilson." Derek tells me.
"How did this happen, one minute we were driving, talking about how we need to get a car seat soon. That was the last thing we talked about before the worst happened. We were just driving back from the airport and this tree falls on top of the hood out of nowhere." Alex says.
"We're gonna get some X-Rays and CT's now, Alex, it's gonna be okay." I tell him.
*Jo POV*
I can't feel the right side of my body. I hear noises and I hear voices but none of them make sense at all.
I try to say her name. She's not kicking and I'm getting worried. "A-sht" I try saying Ashton.
"Alex?" Aprils asks me "He's got some injuries but nothing we can't handle."
I try to say Ashton again. "Ash--ton".
"Who's Ashton?" April asks me as Arizona enters the trauma room with a fetal monitor. I take her hand and point to my belly.
"Is she a-live?" I ask when my voice breaks.
April and Arizona look at each other, "From what we see on your injuries, there's no bruising that would come from an airbag on or around our abdomen, so if we're right then your little girl should be just fine."
They begin an ultrasound and looking for the heartbeat.
Thud-thud. Thud-thud. Thud-thud.
It continues loud and strong. "Jo, I don't know what kinda of crash you and Alex were in but your baby has been untouched." Arizona tells me.
Derek comes in and says "You have a fracture near the top of your spine. I am confident that with surgery we can repair and you will regain full mobility. But there's always a risk..." He keeps going but I'm barely listening.
"We need to have her on a fetal monitor to prevent early delivery." Arizona says.
*Alex POV*
I get back from CT and X-rays and Torres tells me, "Karev, I don't know what the hell happened but your arm is severely damaged. We're looking at full reconstruction of the radius and ulna. Luckily your hand wasn't damaged."
"We're going to have to surgically remove the shard of glass in you because it's keeping you from bleeding out." Meredith tells me.
"I blocked it," I mumble feeling like I'm falling in and out of consciousness.
"You blocked it? Alex, what did you block?" Mer asks me.
"I blocked the air bag...to stop it from hitting the baby." I say.
I cough and a lot of blood comes out, the shard must have moved. The pain is excruciating and I beg Mer to pull out.
