It's Been Nice Knowing You: Sergi Canós

Sergi started bright. He was doing, presumably, very good at La Masia, Barcelona's youth academy. But he left them. And now, on 13 July, he leaves us officially to Norwich FC. The fee up front will be £2.5m, but depending on how things go, it could rise to £4.5m as well as us having a buyback clause should he do well enough that we think we want him back.

He came to us on a free from La Masia, with Barcelona really upset about losing him as he could play as a winger or forward (think Griezmann), getting so obviously upset that they asked around to their own FA if this was allowed and all so they could get him back.

He received international clearance in November of 2013 and came straight into the Under-18s side at 16 years old in the 13-14 season and got into the reserves side not too long after, progressing quite nicely through it.

In the 14-15 season, he was loaned to Brentford, making regular substitute appearances as he made his way into the side and even went into the UEFA Youth League that season, scoring a goal in that tournament and scoring his first senior goal against Nottingham Forest after three minutes of coming on. The Championship side had a change in management to Dean Smith in December 2014, which had a very positive effect for Canós as he broke into the starting lineup and extended his loan to the 15-16 season. He finished off his loan with them after scoring a goal of the season against Reading and getting a very big number of appearances with them.

His debut with us was actually his last match with us against West Brom in the 1-1 draw where he played very nicely, got his Klopp hug as well as praise form the manager. Not too bad for only one showing.

The situation for Canós is about the same as Teixeira. The only real reason I see that he had to go is our huge depth in the midfield area, as his position is being taken up by Mané, Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana and at times Origi and Ings. It take a serious injury apocalypse to get him on the team sheet with those people. There's no doubting his ability, he was at Barcelona and was well liked there, it's now just doubting if he would have gotten onto the team sheet here.

YNWA Sergi, hope to see you again in the Premier League, whether in Red or Yellow.
