In the few hours to follow, Florence forgot about the world. She was aware that life was still going on; people running for trains, cars driving by, happy children jumping over cracks in the pavement. However, it all seemed distant and meaningless. She was stuck in a melancholic world, where pain and numbness formed into some kind of dreamworld.
Dan had helped her onto a bus, where she felt everyones gaze, she squeezed her eyes shut and muffled her sobs in Dan's jacket. She daren't look at the pitiful stares she assumed she was receiving. Thirty minutes later he had led her off the bus and towards home, her legs moved automatically, feeling had left them in the building where Mara had shot Nick.
When they reached home, Dan had sat her down and took off her boots, Florence stared at him but she didn't see him. He muttered something, Florence didn't hear, she just saw him take his phone and shut the bedroom door. Calling someone, presumably.
So there she sat, alone. Senseless. Thoughts flooded her head, making everything hazy. Any attempt to collect her thoughts had failed, she just wanted something. What that was, she wasn't sure. She couldn't wish Nick back, he was dead. Her family was messed up, she was messed up. "Don't spiral, figure this out." She spoke softly to herself.
Suddenly, a memory surfaced.
It was a couple of summers ago, she had been at Nick's, she was crying over Gavin.
"He's changing, he's not the same. Or maybe it's just me. Is it me?" She had cried pathetically.
"It's never you Florence. You're spiraling, look, when you spiral and think it's all your fault all you have to do is sing about how awesome you actually are." He smirked, his eyes twinkled mischievously.
"You're joking aren't you? Come on, give me a demonstration." She said clearing her tears.
"Okay. Prepare to be WOWed by my awesomeness." He coughed, "I am so handsome, I am so great, I am the guy, that all guys hate. I have cheek bones and soft wavy hair, I make all the pretty girls ..stop and stare. Oooooooooooooo." He had tried to imitate a Doowop band from the 50's, he wasn't the best singer but ultimately he felt proud of himself.
Florence in the meantime had burst out laughing. "I am not doing that." She had chuckled. As she remembered this, she saw Nick's smile and knew he was happy. He was always happy. And she loved him for that. So, she stood up.
"I am kind and I am sweet. I'm the girl that all guys want to meet. I am beautiful like you have never seen, I am the beauty queen." She sobbed all the way through but somehow, she knew if Nick were there, he'd be laughing in disbelief and that made her continue. "I am the girl that all guys adore, I'm the prettiest girl they ever saw. They will always remember, my elegant grace, and I bet they all wait for that smile upon my face." Out of her sobs she giggled, Dan, unbeknownst to her was stood behind her.
She jumped when she saw Dan move.
