Florence took a few minutes to recover. She was still shaking and tears were streaming down her cheeks.
They sat on the floor. Nick held her and stroked her hair. Silence consumed them.
Florence knew she didn’t have to explain herself to Nick the way she always had to with Dan, Nick just knew.
Florence fell asleep on Nick who just stared at her and continued stroking her hair. He heard Dan get up but he was too tired to argue with him, if he came in, when he came in.
Dan shuffled into the kitchen and found Nick sat there with Florence sleeping in his arms.
Nick looked at him for a long while, “I am seriously very tired, I do not have time to argue with you. Florence fainted earlier on must be because of the flu and I caught her and to be honest I couldn’t be asked to move from this position because I have been up most of the night making sure you both are safe.” He said.
Dan nodded. “Do you want a beer? She can be a bit heavy.”
Nick chortled. “Sure. And I know that, the amount of times I’ve had to save her or drag her unconscious body away.”
“The police suddenly sound a lot dangerous that I thought.”
“We were a special team, we dealt with dangerous people.”
“Is that why Karmin was sent as a spy?”
“Must’ve been.” Nick added whilst Dan opened up a beer and passed it to him.
“She’s beautiful when she’s asleep.” Dan came out with spontaneously.
“Yeah, I never realized how soft her hair was.”
“This is a really random conversation.”
“No, it’s a mutual understanding of liking a girl.”
“Nick, promise to keep her safe if I get shot.” Dan said kneeling in front of him and Florence.
“I will protect both of you, I promise.” He said looking at Florence and then back to Dan.
“Thank you, do you want me to take her back to bed?” Dan asked. Nick nodded.
Dan looped his arms under her shoulder and leg. Florence latched onto him tiredly.
