Dan’s face was covered in cuts and bruises. Tears stung his cheeks. Everything was hazy. His mind tried to relay what had happened, Nick being knocked out by the car crash, the seat sliding back making Florence wake up and scream, him whacking her so hard he knocked her out. Victor had shot Gwen in the side and dragged her out and then proceeded to knock Dan out and take him and Nick to what he assumed was a secret hideaway.

He only knew Nick was there because they had been placed in a room for a few moments before they had taken him out to question him. But finally after a measure of torturing and questioning they were back in the same darkened room. Neither of them spoke for a while, they just glanced at eachother from time to time, it was clear both of them were in pain. Daniel tried his best to hide his tears and muffle his sobs but Nick knew, he just kept quiet.

It took Dan a while to muster up any motivation to talk. “Are they going to kill us?” He stuttered. Nick was staring at the door, he didn’t turn to speak. “No, they would have done that by now, they’re waiting for Florence. But I do not doubt they will kill us after they have her.” He spoke firmly; Dan could sense something was wrong with him. “What are we going to do?” He asked.

Nick turned his head and smirked at him, “The pessimist is now an optimist, Dan there isn’t anything we can do. They will kill us if we step out of that door.” Dan shook his head, for a moment Nick looked scared but he quickly returned to his tough façade. “Nick, we can’t just sit here. We could at least try and go down fighting, instead of quivering like cowards.” As soon as Dan said it he knew he shouldn’t have.

Nick stared at him coldly. “Is that what I am now? Huh? A coward? The man who has protected your wife for so long and now you. I have been shot, beaten up and so much more in order to save both of you. I have devoted all of my time and energy to guarding both of you. You’d both be dead a hundred times if I wasn’t here. Daniel words cannot describe how much I am in love with Florence and I will continue to lay down my life for her and you but if there is one thing I am not, it is definitely a coward.” Tears welled up in Nick’s eyes. He loved Florence with all his heart, her words earlier were like a melody in his ears, everything he wanted to hear but he couldn’t.

“I’m sorry.” Daniel muttered, “For everything.” Dan saw the pain in Nick’s eyes as he fought back tears, one managed to slip down his cheek but he quickly wiped it away.

“Dan someone is going to die, I don’t know who but someone will and I can’t let it be Florence. We just need to sit and wait until she comes.” He said gently making sure no more tears were to escape. “Nick she loves you, she always has.” Dan stated.

Nick shook his head, “No, she loves you. I never compared.” He went silent and turned his head, Dan figured he was trying to conceal his emotions. At that moment he realized how much Nick loved Florence, he realized it was more than he ever could and he admired him for that, for his determination to protect Florence. He had devoted his life to protect her and it’s more than Dan had ever done. Florence loved Nick, he knew that for sure but nothing had happened and Dan felt saddened by Nick’s situation. Dan gazed over at Nick. “Thank you for protecting her.”
