Nezther
I wipe my eyes, shaking my head. I got together a bag for Jason with some clothes and his cell phone and laptop. I walk downstairs.
"Everyone's in the car. They're waiting for you," Leigh says as she hands me my jacket.
I nod, sniffling. "Thanks," I mumble.
As I climb in the driver's side, I hear Jasper say, "I got daddy's favorite blanky from your room. I know he loves it," he says proudly.
I just nod, chewing on my bottom lip. Justin reaches forward from the backseat. "None of that, ma'am," he quotes Jason as he takes my lip from my teeth.
Supposedly, Jason hasn't had a breakdown in two weeks. One of the nurses decided to take him out as a treat. They had to park across the street and walk to the restaurant. According to the nurse, Jason jumped. He's in the ICU right now in Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital.
It took us twenty five minutes, but we finally made it. "I'm going to throw up," I say as I jog into the waiting room. "My husband, Jason McCann, they said he's here?" I say to the woman at the desk.
She looks at her computer then at me. "Yeah, down that hall, take the elevator to the ninth floor, and room 1048," she tells me.
"Thank you," I say to her as I lead everyone else. "My baby," I rush to his side.
He breathes slowly, barely opening his eyes to look at me. "N-Nezther," he smiles faintly.
I cup his bruised cheeks. "I'm here, baby," I kiss his lips quickly.
"I didn't jump," he coughs, "I didn't do it. I swear by it."
I nod my head, looking down to his body. "I believe you, love, don't worry. You're tired, huh? Jasper brought you your favorite blanket. Go back to sleep," I caress his cheek. He closes his eyes, wincing as I touch his broken arm. "Sorry," I mumble- even though he's already asleep.
A man in a white coat, the doctor, comes in as my son places the fuzzy blanket on my fiancé. "Ms. McCann, may I speak with you in the hall?" He asks gently. I nod, following him outside of the room. "He's hurt badly, as you can see," he tells me. I nod again, leaning against the door. "He cracked a few ribs, broke his left arm and his left foot is shattered in multiple places," he informs.
"My poor baby," tears make their way down my face. "He said he didn't jump."
The doctor shakes his head. "I don't believe he did. Quite frankly, I think the nurse didn't want to loose her job for not watching out for him," he shrugs.
"Can we work something out to where I take him home when he's free to leave? I don't want him to go back there," I whisper.
"Of course," he looks down at his papers. "I can call over there right now, if you'd like."
"I'd love that."
A few hours later, Jasper was sleeping across my lap on the small couch. Leigh sits next to me, scrolling through Instagram. I look up to see Justin and Kinsley standing up. "We're going to walk around to stretch our legs," she tells me softly.
I nod, looking to my fiancé. I see his eyes open slightly, staring at me. "You're getting big," he says, referring to my belly.
I look down, rubbing it proudly. "Yeah, they're growing well."
"Leigh," he gets her attention. She locks her phone and looks up to him. "Can you wake up Jasper and take him down to the cafeteria? I need to chat with Nezther for a few minutes," his raspy voice comes out harsh. Once they're gone, Jason pats the bed. "Come lay with me."
I climb under the fuzzy blanket that was on our bed back home. He pulls me as close to him as he can without squishing our babies.
"You look beautiful," he whispers. "You always look amazing. I take pride in being able to call you mine. I love you, Nezther."
I shake my head. "Don't say it like that."
"Just say it back," His eyes start to droop.
"Jason, I love you," I whisper. "Baby, keep your eyes open."
"I can- can't... I'm so.... tired..."
I stand up with a shriek as his heart monitor starts to slow down. "Someone help!" I screech. "Baby, keep your eyes open. Look at me."
His eyes stare into mine with a distant look. "Don't let me leave," he squeezes my hand.
Nurses and doctors walk into the room, pushing me out. I just slide down the wall next to the door, silently crying.
