I sit in the waiting room. Something had gone wrong while Nezther was in labor. They asked me to leave but stand by for any information.
Two hours earlier
"Jason, you don't understand," Nezther cries against my chest. I wince when she hits my ribs. "They're two months early. I can't lose them, Jace," she sobs.
Justin speeds up, driving as fast as he can to get us to the hospital. "I know, baby," I whisper. "But they need you to be strong right now, okay? They need their Momma," I kiss her head. She sniffles, but nods, understanding where I am coming from.
One hour earlier
"It hurts so bad," Nezther cries out. "Why does it hurt?!" She yells.
I run my fingers through her hair. "I'm not sure, Darling. But it's okay, it's going to be okay. I'm right here," I try to assure her.
"It didn't hurt like this with Jasper," she shakes her head. "I–"
She's cut off by the gynecologist walking in. "Okay, Nezther! It's okay, your babies were very healthy this morning. Do not fret a single thing, stressing out will stress them out and it is not healthy for the babies."
I look back to Nezther. "See, babe?" I wipe the sweat off her forehead. "It's going to be fine. Just stop stressing, please. We don't want our babies hurt, right?" She shakes her head, screaming out as another contraction hits.
Thirty minutes earlier
I look over at Nezther to see her eyes closed. The room is filled with screams from our baby girls An alarm like sound buzzes throughout the room. Two nurses shout something I cannot hear, I'm more focused on why Nezther's breathing is slowly.
"Princess," I furrow my eyebrows. "Baby, don't you want to see our beautiful girls?" I shake her arm gently.
"Sir, step away from her!"
Present time
"Ms. Nezther G. Bennett?" I stand up as quickly as I can, using my crutches to walk over to the doctor. "Good evening," he says to all of us. "Ms. Bennett is completely fine, very healthy. We stitched her up and she is now asleep."
"Can I see her?" I sniffle.
He shakes his head. "I'm afraid not. Not yet at least. As of now she needs rest. She has just taken some pain medication to soothe the aches of the tears."
"Can I see my babies?" I ask.
He nods, "yes, you may. But they– they're small, Mister McCann. Jenny is three pounds, seven ounces and Grace is one pound, four ounces," he informs me.
"My poor baby. She's only one pound?"
"Yes, very small. But once they are up to six pounds, you can take them home. We predict Jenny will go home before Grace will."
I frown at that statement. "When can I see Nezther?" I ask quietly.
"When she–"
Justin cuts him off. "Please don't say when she wakes up," he groans. "Do you know how much they've been through? Jason was in rehab for a month, then got hit by a car, and he just got home yesterday. Nezther was raped a couple years ago and she didn't even let Jason near her- unless she needed him desperately- for a year. Do you know how hard that was for the both of them?" He snaps at the man. "They don't deserve this. They deserve to be happy, they deserve to be with each other right now in this time of need."
We all stare at Justin with our mouths agape. The doctor clears his throat. "Right this way."
Everyone files into Nezther's room before I do. I stop Justin before he can go in. "Thank you," I whisper. "You didn't have to do that. But you got me back here and I'm grateful for that. However, that doesn't mean I forgive you for everything." He nods, looking down to his feet. "But I'm willing to put it behind us and have a fresh start."
He looks up at me and smiles. "Really?" He breathes out.
I nod, "yes. But you have to earn back my trust. And Nezther's also," I tell him.
"Of course, yeah.."
I look into the room to see Nezther stirring a bit in the bed. "Let's go," I sigh. He holds the door open for me. I sit next to my fiancée on her bed. "Hey, baby," I kiss her cheek. "Our girls are okay. They're tiny, but they're okay," I whisper.
She opens her eyes to a squint. "C-Can w-we see th-them?"
I look over at Kinsley. "Can you get a nurse?" She nods before dashing out of the room. "I'm going to ask, Precious."
Kinsley walks in with another male dressed in scrubs. "What can I do for you?" He asks politely.
"Ca-Can I-I go see m-my ba-babies?" Nezther stutters.
He nods, "of course you can. Let me get you a wheel chair," he walks out briskly.
Minutes later, the man comes back with a wheel chair. "How about Jason sits in it and Nezther sits on his lap? I can push you guys," Justin suggests.
"How about that, Angel? Do you want to do that?" I stand up from the bed.
She nods, "c-cannot m-m-move. F-feet hur-hurt."
Justin lifts her from the bed, making her cry out in pain. He apologizes multiple times as I sit in the chair. He sets her on my lap gently. I wrap my arms around her waist as much as I can.
The male nurse guides us down a long hallway. "D-Don't wor-worry. B-Babies o-o-okay," she kisses my head.
I smile, leaning my head against her shoulder. We stop in front of a door. "You can't hold Grace, she's too small. But you can hold Jenny for a few minutes," he tells us.
My fiancée's eyes light up as he places the premature infant in her arms. I stare down at the baby also, a grin spread across my face. Justin, Kinsley, and Leigh all snap pictures of us. I look up to see Nezther staring at the other baby in the incubator.
"M-My sol-soldier," she coos as she stands up. Kinsley holds onto her waist so she doesn't fall. I take the baby from her arms. "W-Wanna h-h-hold Gracie," she tells the man.
He bites his lip. "I don't think–"
"P-Please? B-Baby need t-t-to know m-mom-mommy did-didn't aband-abandon her," she cuts him off.
"Two minutes," he sighs heavily.
Nezther holds Gracie in her arms as Jenny sleeps in mine. "B-Baby," Nessie caresses our daughter's cheek. "M-Mommy here."
Leigh pulls up a chair for Nezther to sit in. "I'm sorry, but she isn't supposed to be out of the incubator," the man takes Grace.
Immediately, she starts crying. Two other nurses come rushing in. "What happened?" One asks.
"I took her away from her mother," he says quietly.
The girl nods. "She'll stop crying in a few minutes. Let's get the other one in her incubator."
