Leigh

I let out a groan as I turn on my side. "You awake?" I hear a soft voice. I open my eyes to see Jason sitting next to me with Nezther on his left side. "Hi, baby," Jason smiles. I look at the food on the table between us. "That's for you," he tells me.

I slowly sit up. "Is there any water?" I rasp out. Nezther stands up and walks over to her purse, which is by the door. She pulls out a bottle of water before bringing it to me. "Can you lay with me?" I grab her wrist.

She looks up at Jason as if asking permission. He nods once, making her sit next to me. "There's some fries in there and a fish fry because I know you've been craving it."

I smile up at her tiredly. "I have been," I cough. Her phone buzzes on the table. I reach over and hand it to her.

"Hello?" She answers. "Yeah, no... Jason will come get her and we'll have her checked out. J-Just keep her talking," tears stream down her face. She sets her phone down after hanging up. "Can you go get Grace, Jason? Kinsley said she's complaining her heart hurts and it's hard to breathe."

He nods, standing up. He kisses my forehead, then Nezther's lips. "I'll be back. Love you," he grumbles.

As soon as the door closes behind him, I turn to Nezther. "Did something happen? Did he hurt you?" She lifts up the sleeve of her cardigan. I see a black bruise forming against her wrist. "Nes!"

She shakes her head. "It's fine, Leigh. Don't worry, he just got a little frustrated," she whispers, avoiding eye contact with me.

"Don't let him do it again," I whisper.

She shrugs, "he won't. It was just him getting a little upset, that's all."

I walk up the stairs to Nezther and Jason's room. "I told you not to do it again!" I hear him yell.

I furrow my eyebrows, but stay at the top step. "I know, baby, I said I was sorry," I hear Nezther say quietly. "Ow, Jace please let go," she whimpers.

I knock on the door. "Nes?" I call out.

"Cover it up, bitch," he growls. The door opens a few seconds later. "What's up?" Jason smiles innocently.

"I came to ask Nessie something," I smile back.

He steps aside to let me in. I walk in to see Nezther walking out of the bathroom. "What's up, love?" Her cheeks are all red and puffy.

"Can you come help me pick out an outfit for tonight?" I ask, examining her face a little more.

She looks past me. Jason must've shaken his head because she tells me no. "Can you wait a few minutes? Jason and I were talking about something," she looks at me hopefully.

I just nod. "Yeah, I guess so," I shrug.

I walk down the stairs until I hear Jason scream at her again. "I DON'T CARE!" And then a loud bang.

I run back up the stairs, this time with Kinsley behind me with the kids following her. I push open the door, nearly tearing up at the sight.

"WHAT DID YOU DO!?" I scream at Jason as I kneel next to Nezther.

I pull her unconscious body into my arms. He backs up against the wall, shaking his head. "I-I don't know," he whispers. "I... we- I blacked out."

He tries to come over to us, but Kinsley pushes him back. "Not now, Jason. Stay there," she pushes him onto the bed.

Nezther moves a little bit, grabbing onto my hand. "What happened?" She mumbles. I groan when she sits up and hits my chest. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry, baby," she panics.

I shake my head. "It's okay, Momma," I whisper. "Are you okay? Do you remember what happened?"

Her eyes widen. "I–I fell," she stammers.

"I hit her, didn't I?" Jason sobs. "I hit you."

Nezther stands up quickly. "No, baby, it wasn't you, remember? It's not you, baby," she sits next him on the bed.

He leans into her, his cries becoming screams. "He just hit you and you're babying him?" Kinsley walks over to them. She pulls Nezther away from him. "How long has this been going on?"

Jasper runs over to Nezther and hugs her legs. The other kids follow suit. She kneels down and pulls her kids into her arms. "Since he got home from the hospital," she mumbles.

"THREE WEEKS!?" My girlfriend screams. "YOU'VE BEEN LETTING HIM ABUSE YOU FOR THREE WEEKS!?"

Jason pulls at his hair harshly. "Grab him," she tells me. I grab his hands and pull them away from his head. "He's not–"

"DON'T SAY HE ISN'T BECAUSE YOU KNOW HE IS."

"Babe, calm down," I say to her.

Kinsley's face is red with anger. "Nezther, why're you letting him do this?"

"He's frustrated right now, Kinsley. You wouldn't understand. I don't even understand, but I know I love him and I'd let him do what he needs to do to feel better."
