The doctor comes in and tells us that my wrist was only a mild sprain and if I kept it wrapped it would heal fine in a week or two. Logan surprisingly didn't break any fingers and only had to rub ointment on it every day while the gashes closed. The doctor left the room and a nurse came in and cleaned the open cuts on my knees from when I hit the ground. She showed me how to wrap the bandage around my wrist to let it properly heel. She went on to pour some of the ointment onto Logan's open knuckles and showed him how to properly wrap the bandage. Once we were cleaned up, she led us to a door with 'conference room' labeled on the front.
She held it open for us as we walked through. Two uniformed police officers stand up to greet us.
"Hello. I'm Officer Jack and this is my partner Officer Ken." He motions for us to sit down in the chairs across the table. "Why don't we start by telling us what happened." He looks at me as his partner pulls out a notepad and pen.
I swallow back tears as I begin. "Well, I had met this guy on the beach last night. He was there with a group of his friends from school. His name was Crew. He asked me on a date to go and grab some food from a place he liked a lot. While we were sitting there two guys came up and started talking down on Crew. The one guy tried to touch my face, but I shooed him away. After that Crew wanted to leave and at this point I was ready to too. He asked if we could continue to walk and talk. I didn't really want to, but he was my ride and I didn't want the night to end on a bad note. So we started to walk farther down the boardwalk." I take a deep breath and look up at the ceiling trying to not cry in front of these men. Logan reaches over under the table and puts his hand on my thigh. "He grabbed me and pinned me against the side of a closed shop." My voice becomes shaky as I rush to tell the rest of the story.
"I know this may be difficult, but it is extremely important that we know exactly everything that happened." Officer Jack waits patiently for me to continue.
"He started to kiss me aggressively. I told him to stop and yelled for help, but the end of the boardwalk was empty. His friend, who was also at the beach the night before, showed up. Crew asked him to take his camera out to get proof. Haiden mentioned that this was their third girl since the start of summer. They had an ongoing game with a rival fraternity to see which house could sleep with more girls." I stopped and looked over at Logan. "Haiden was taking videos on his phone." Logan grabbed the phone from his pocket and placed it on the table.
"You can find the videos he took of her on there and he probably has proof of the other girls as well." Logan inserts as he slides the phone towards Officer Jack.
"So Crew was starting to inappropriately touch you and that's when you showed up Mr. Walker?" The officer looked over at Logan. Logan remained silent as he nodded to answer the question. "Did you two come here together?"
"No. I came with my friend Alyssa." I answered. I knew that Logan was becoming uncomfortable.
"So did you know Logan was coming into town?"
"No. I didn't."
"Mr. Walker, how did you know where to find Theresa?" The officer asked with an underlining accusation in his tone.
"Her friend was worried about her going out alone so they downloaded some tracking app."
"You went to look for her when she was supposed to be on a date?" This session started to feel more like an interrogation with each question. Logan's grip on my thigh became tighter. I placed my hand on top of his as he hesitated to answer the question.
"Yes." He finally answered.
"Why? A date is usually left between two people." The officer continued.
"Because I wanted to make sure she was ok with this stranger."
"So you used the app to track her to this alley. How long do you think it was before Mr. Walker showed up?"
"Maybe ten minutes at the most." I answered.
"Mr. Walker, you saw Theresa pinned against the wall and you started to attack. Why would you start with the guy with the camera?"
"He was the one closest to me. I don't know. I saw what was happening and I needed to stop it before Theresa got hurt any worse."
"Ok. How many times would you say you punched Haiden?"
"I don't know. Maybe four times."
"And was he passed out when you hit him the fourth time?"
"No. He passed out with the last punch."
"How about Crew? What did you do to get him off of her?"
"He threatened to bash her head against the brick wall. I grabbed him before he could and threw him off of her. I punched him once or twice and he returned the favor."
"How did you end up getting out of that?"
"Well, Theresa got up off the ground and jumped on him giving me enough time to stand back up. I punched him once more and he fell to the ground."
"Was he unconscious when you left?"
"Yes."
"Ok. We will take a look at this phone and pull all the evidence off. Listen, to get these boys charged we will need to dig deeper. If this is really fraternity related rapes we may have a larger problem on our hands. You may not hear anything for up to a year or you could hear something tomorrow. Thank you both for your cooperation. Theresa, please call us if you need help with anything." I just nod and Logan shakes both of the officers' hands.
We walk out of the hospital back to the Nissan. He opens the passenger's side door and I climb in. He climbs into the driver's seat and sits there silently. He leaves the keys in his lap and takes a deep breath. I am not sure if he is angry or upset. He turns to face me. "Listen Theresa. This may not be the best time to bring this up."
