We were obviously a low priority case in the emergency room because Bradley walked into the small waiting room before we saw the doctor.
"Nice going man." Bradley says as he enters the small waiting room. Before anyone can say anything else, a female doctor wearing a white jacket walks in.
"Good evening. You all look dashing." She acknowledges the fancy clothes we all are wearing. "I see that we have some broken fingers." She walks over and James stands up and takes the icepack off his knuckles. "So what happened?"
Before anyone could input James takes lead. "This guy over here was talking crap to my girl so I had to put him in his place."
She looks over to Logan who was still sitting in the chair. He was obviously lost, but played along. "You got hit in the face?" She asked as she motioned Logan to standup and walk over to where she was still examining James' hand. She takes a close look at the place where he got hit. "Ok, so you both are going to head to X-rays. Once I can get a better look at what we are dealing with I will meet you both in an exam room." The nurse that was standing in the doorway moved out of the way as the doctor left.
"Alright, you all can follow me." The nurse instructs as she turns to walk down the hallway. Bradley and I waited outside the door as the nurse took the x-rays. She then led us to a small exam room. James sat on the hospital bed and the rest of us sat in the chairs that lined the room. The doctor returned and told us that James had 2 broken fingers and had to get them put into a finger splint before we could leave. She also said that Logan had a small crack in his jaw that would hurt like hell if he didn't take the pain killer that she was writing for him. After giving the hospital the information for insurance coverage, we walked back out to the parking lot.
"I have to take my date home." Bradley inserted as we crossed through the automatic glass doors.
"Your date has been in the car this whole time?" I questioned hoping that he was joking. He stood there with a dumbfounded look on as his face thinking of a way to answer my question without getting into more trouble.
"Gotta go!" He said as he sprinted towards the other end of the parking lot.
"I'll drive you back to your house, but I'll need to find a ride back." I say as I grab the keys to James' car out of the small clutch.
"I can follow you to his house and take you home." Logan inserts before James has the chance to deny the doctor's orders and not drive until Monday morning. We make it all the way to James' house and I drop the car keys into his hand as I walk over to give him a hug bye. I walk towards the big black truck that is waiting at the end of the driveway. Before I reach the end of the driveway, I see Logan getting out and walking to the passenger's side door.
"You didn't have to do that." I say as I pull my dress up with my one hand while grabbing the handle with the other. My heeled foot departs through the slip in the dress as I use the step to aid my attempt of getting into the truck without falling. "Thanks" I smile as I sit in the seat. Without a word he closes the door and walks back the driver's side and climbs in. He pulls away and starts to drive. The clock on the dash reads 12:55 am.
"Do you have to be home by a certain time?" He catches me looking at the clock.
"No, I was just surprised to see how late it actually was."
"You're not a night owl like the rest of us?" He asks.
"You guys make me a night owl. I'm such a morning person it kind of sucks."
"Do you mind if we make a stop first, or would you rather I take you straight home?"
"Honestly, I would stay out all night if I had the chance. This night is too young to end." It was true. Even though prom was technically ruined and I ended up spending hours in the hospital, this was a night I was happy happened.
"Ok." He smiled and looked back onto the deserted road. I wasn't sure where he wanted to stop, but I had no idea where we were. The road he turned onto a few miles back barely had any streetlights on it. If it weren't for the bright blue headlight, the road would be completely black. Not long after we came upon a familiar view. The truck slowed as it popped the curb and we were driving through the narrow wooden path. I was smiling at the idea of just sitting and watching over the quiet city. From the corner of my eye I saw Logan look over. I didn't acknowledge that he had taken a longer than needed stare.
He pulled into the clearing and turned the truck around so the bed was facing the city. We both opened the door of the cab. I climbed down and felt the soft ground under my heel. The ground wasn't ideal for heels so I bent down and unstrapped the buckle and placed the heels on the floor of the cab and closed the door. I walked forward and stood at the edge of the overlook. The view was even more beautiful than when I was here in the day light. The moon was visible over the city and the lack of cars made the night even quieter.
The sound of the driver's side door closing startled me. Music began to play as I turned around to see Logan walking towards the edge of the overlook where I was standing. "Hey." He stopped right in front of me. "Lets dance." He passively demanded as he held his hand out and waited for me to follow along. I placed my hand in his and he pulled me in close while placing his other hand on my lower back.
