Myra's POV:
"Do you wanna build a snowman?" The little girl I was watching, Cassandra, sang. She was around six years old and unbelievably energetic. "Not particularly. Besides, there's no snow outside and it's basically a billion degrees out." I exaggerated dramatically and fake fainted onto the couch next to her. "Too hot, can't sing along..." I gasped, closing my eyes. "But Myra," she whined. "You're always cold." She grabbed ahold of my hand and shivered. I grinned and opened my eyes.
"Cass that's just because I'm so cool." I stood up and posed with my hands on my hips. "Trust me it's not." She told me seriously as she stood up too and walked over to me. "Go on, I know you can do it!" She hugged me around my waist since she was too short to reach any higher. "What? You don't think I'm cool?" I mock pouted. "And what's with all the hugging?"
"Well you're Elsa! Obviously! And Elsa's ice magic is unlocked by love!" She announced proudly and hugged me tighter. I laughed and gently unwrapped her arms from around my waist and kneeled down. "You're just a modern day ice witch! You're on the good side and you're fighting for me! Princess Cassandra of the Royal Sofa!" Her deep indigo-blue eyes stared into my plain brown ones. Then, she leapt up onto the sofa and stared down at me.
"My most trusted servant! By the power of the Sofa Kingdom, I declare you my knight!" Cass's squeaky voice was loud as she attempted to be regal. I bowed my head, still kneeling on the floor.
"I would be privileged to be your protector, Princess Cass." Just then her parents stormed in the house, yelling at each other. Cass looked scared and I picked her up. What I didn't notice were the wisps of frost that flew off my fingers as soon as they entered. Once they saw me holding Cass, they stopped quickly.
"Hello girls!" The fake cheerfulness in her father's' voice was evident. Cass refused to look at either of them and buried her face into my neck. I tightened my hold on her, I made a quick irrational decision that tonight I was not leaving this girl here. My respect for Mr. and Mrs. Irvine had faded rapidly over the past few months. I stroked her blonde hair while I held her.
"Mr. Irvine, Mrs. Irvine." I addressed them icily. I glared slightly and clenched my teeth, trying to keep calm for Cass. Her small hands gripped onto my shirt like a lifeline. "Myra! I'm glad to see everything went well!" Mrs. Irvine spoke quickly. She clearly wanted me to leave. The tension in the air was so thick you could reach out and touch it. Mr. Irvine walked across the room and forcefully grabbed Cass out of my arms. She let out a surprised yelp and reached out for me. I took a step forward, but he turned his back and stalked off to Cass's room with Cass crying out for me over his shoulder. My face contorted into a snarl and Mrs. Irvine shot him a sharp glare. She attempted to hand me a fifty dollar bill, but I quickly declined.
"I should go. Tell Cass I said goodnight ok?" I smiled at Mrs. Irvine. She nodded and tried to apologise for her husband's behaviour. I declined her apology and walked towards the door with my boots echoing loudly across the pristine tile. I reached for the doorknob and gripped it tightly. I breathed in deeply and opened it and stepped into the hot night air. I unintentionally slammed the door behind me and flinched. Then I began the short walk home. I was halfway down their street when I heard the unmistakable sound of glass shattering. I turned around, the only house with lights on was Cass's. I broke into a run back to her house. The air temperature dropped rapidly as I neared the house. The doorknob was covered in frost and broke off when I touched it. In a fit of panic I kicked in the door and busted inside.
"We can't keep living like this!" Mrs. Irvine screeched at her husband who held the top of a broken beer bottle in hand. He swayed unsteadily on his feet and swore at her. I scanned the room and saw Cass in a pool of blood next to the sofa. Her small body was starting to freeze over. I screamed and ran towards her, ignoring her parents completely. What they said or did next was a blur.
