Selflessness

"Selflessness"
A foreign word in my vocabulary.
Truthfully, it's an absurdity.

It is described as being,
An unselfish act,
That is in concern,
With the welfare of others.

But see,
We live in a world,
Where it is one man,
For himself.

Everything we do,
Everything we say,
Is for our own well being,
It is to pin a smile on our own faces,
To have our own tears wiped.

You might disagree,
And point out to me,
What about a man,
Who took a bullet,
For the love of his life.
But that too,
Was a selfish act.
He thought of the anguish,
The distress and the fret,
That would take him over,
If she were to die,
So with his own well being
In mind,
He took the bullet and died,
Leaving her with the tears
And the scars across her heart.

What about giving,
When you have nothing?
The thought of pleasing,
Knowing that you have helped,
The less fortunate,
As absurd as it sounds,
That is selfish too.
You smile,
And butterflies churn in your stomach,
It has your best interest at heart.
You want to feel,
That you've made a difference.
It's your card,
To heighten your appearance,
Your appearance of trying to look,
Like a person who cares,
When truthfully you only want,
The recognition.

"Selflessness"
A foreign word in our  vocabulary.

Argue as much as you want,
As usual,
The selfish act,
Of only wanting,
To prove yourself right.
Your best interest,
In mind.
