Avery's POV...

As we stepped into the grandiose "Taylor Jewels," it felt as though every pair of eyes in the room were fixated on me, Emily, and Brendan. Perhaps it was just my imagination running wild.

A stunning young woman, Jennifer, greeted us with a warm smile. She was dressed in black slacks, a vibrant red blouse, and silver wire frame glasses, exuding an air of elegance.

"Hello, my name is Jennifer. How may I assist you today?" she asked graciously.

Emily wasted no time in responding, her voice filled with excitement. "Do you happen to have any alluring masquerade gowns in stock?"

Jennifer's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Are there any specific colors or styles you have in mind?"

Brendan, wearing an enormous grin, chimed in, his gaze fixed on me. "We're leaning towards petite, short dresses in either red or black."

Jennifer's face lit up with delight. "You're in luck! We just received a fresh collection of short dresses this morning," she shared, leading us towards the back of the store.

I playfully brushed past Brendan, jokingly remarking, "Well, it seems like you two have it all under control. I guess I'm not needed here." Making my way towards a stunning hunter-green evening gown, I couldn't help but feel a sense of empowerment.

Emily, with a mischievous smile, retorted, "Oh, we couldn't possibly trust you to show up at the ball in something short and sexy, could we?"

Brendan's voice dripped with disdain as he added, "Knowing you, you'd probably arrive wearing an outdated curtain or something of the sort."

Emily chuckled softly before Jennifer approached us, gracefully carrying three dresses on her arm. Just as I was about to respond to their unnecessary banter, Jennifer interjected, "Follow me," leading us to a secluded dressing room area at the rear of the store.

As I stepped out of the dressing room, the first dress caught my eye—a stunning, flowy red gown. Though it was slightly shorter than I preferred, I still found it appealing. However, Emily and Brendan wasted no time expressing their disapproval.

"This one is definitely a no-no," they chimed in unison, barely sparing a glance at the blue sequin knee-length dress with a daring V-cut between my breasts.

To my surprise, their disdain was echoed by other customers. A tall, middle-aged woman with a rich complexion and gold-rimmed glasses approached me, sharing her opinion. "This dress seems more suited for an older woman, my dear, not someone as young and beautiful as yourself."

A young woman with fiery red hair, who appeared to be around my age, chimed in, "I have to agree with her."

Emily seized the opportunity to gloat, turning to me and saying, "See, Avery? Brendan and I know what we're talking about." She then stuck her tongue out at me, behaving more like a child than a grown woman.

"Whatever," I muttered in response, feeling a tinge of frustration. I swiftly moved on to the next dress, a navy-blue silk gown that hugged my figure and featured a daring thigh-high split. It fit me like a second skin.

"What do you think of this one, Brendan?" Emily inquired, seeking his opinion.

"It does have more appeal than the previous options, but I'm curious to see how Avery looks in the final dress," Brendan replied, his voice filled with contemplation.

Feeling a mix of annoyance and weariness from the constant outfit changes, I trudged back into the dressing room, grumbling under my breath.

"This is the last dress I'm trying on," I declared, my voice carrying through the cracked door of the dressing room. The final option was a seductive black knee-length dress adorned with a gold, sheer lace waistband. It boasted daring thigh-high slits on both sides, a plunging V-neckline that showcased ample cleavage and an open back that left little to the imagination. It was clear that wearing a bra with this dress was out of the question.
